Effects and Functions of Lian Qiao
1. Cardiovascular Protection
One of the important effects of Lian Qiao is its ability to protect the cardiovascular system. The compound oleanolic acid it contains can directly act on the heart and cardiovascular system, improving heart function, preventing cardiovascular aging, stabilizing blood pressure and lipids, and reducing the occurrence of diseases such as heart disease, arteriosclerosis, and thrombosis.
2. Liver Protection
Lian Qiao also has a significant protective effect on the liver, which is the body’s most important detoxification organ. If its function declines, various discomforts or diseases may arise. Regular consumption of Lian Qiao can reduce the damage to the liver from viruses and bacteria, repair damaged liver cells, lower transaminases, and accelerate the production of liver glycogen, helping maintain good detoxification function and preventing various liver diseases.
Medicinal Value of Lian Qiao
1. Treatment of Suppurative Otitis Media
When used medicinally, Lian Qiao can reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, and combat viruses. Clinically, it can be used to treat suppurative otitis media. For treatment, 150 grams of Lian Qiao should be boiled with an appropriate amount of water twice, and the resulting liquid should be mixed and concentrated. During the concentration process, 30 grams of alum should be added. After concentration, an appropriate amount of glycerin should be added. When needed, the resulting liquid can be directly dripped into the ear canal.
2. Treatment of Psoriasis
Lian Qiao can enhance the immune regulation function of the body. Psoriasis is a disease caused by problems with the immune system. It can be treated with Lian Qiao by preparing 400 grams of Lian Qiao, along with 300 grams each of Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis) and Da Qing Ye (Isatis tinctoria). After purification and processing, an injection solution can be made, with 2 grams injected each time.
Lian Qiao is bitter and cold, capable of dispelling toxins and resolving masses. It is the fruit of the deciduous shrub Lian Qiao, found in Northeast China, North China, and the Yangtze River basin to Yunnan. Both wild and cultivated varieties exist. The immature fruit harvested before the White Dew is called Qing Qiao, while the fully ripe fruit harvested before the Cold Dew is called Huang Qiao, with Qing Qiao being the preferred variety.

Main Functions: Clears heat and detoxifies, dissipates nodules and reduces swelling. It is used for heat-related illnesses, thirst, rashes, carbuncles, and external wind-heat colds.
Dosage and Administration: 6-15 grams
Clinical Application: Lian Qiao is bitter and cold, capable of clearing and resolving, making it a sacred medicine for sores. Its light quality ascends and clears the heart, cooling and dispersing the upper jiao. Therefore, this herb is essential for treating sores, carbuncles, and wind-heat onset.
Folk Prescription 1: Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media
Take 150 grams of fresh Lian Qiao, add water, and boil twice to concentrate the liquid to 100 ml. After filtering, add 30 grams of alum to dissolve, then filter again, and add 100 ml of glycerin for later use. Method: First, use 5% hydrogen peroxide solution to clean the outer ear canal several times. After drying, drop 3-5 drops of this preparation into the ear. Use your hand to repeatedly press the ear to allow the liquid to enter the middle ear, applying 3-4 times daily.
Folk Prescription 2: Psoriasis
Use 400 grams of Lian Qiao, and 300 grams each of Huang Qin and Da Qing Ye. Prepare an injection solution, with each vial containing 2 ml (including 2 grams of raw herb), injected intramuscularly at 2 ml, twice daily for 2 weeks to 2 months.
Folk Prescription 3: Purpura
Boil Lian Qiao with water for internal use.
Folk Prescription 4: Intestinal Adhesion
Combine with Jin Yin Hua (Lonicera japonica), Er Hua (Chrysanthemum), Pu Gong Ying (Taraxacum), and She Mei (Rubus) for decoction.
Folk Prescription 5: Wind-Heat Cold
Prepare Lian Qiao Detoxifying Pills as a nasal drop.
Folk Prescription 6: Acute Nephritis, Kidney Tuberculosis
Daily use of 30 grams of Lian Qiao, boiled with water until 150 ml, divided into three doses before meals. Reduce dosage for children. Continue for 5-10 days, avoiding spicy foods and salt.
Folk Prescription 7: Retinal Vein Occlusion
Daily use of 35 grams of Lian Qiao, boiled and taken in three doses before meals, with a treatment course of 27 days.
Folk Prescription 8: Oral Ulcers in Children
Mix Lian Qiao, Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis) 55 grams, Zi Cao (Lithospermum) 45 grams, Bing Pian (Menthol) 30 grams, and Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis) 40 grams, grind into powder and apply locally, 0.3 grams each time, 3-4 times daily, with a treatment course of 5 days.
