The Differences Between Meridians and Collaterals

Two (Part Four)

The “Su Wen: On the Ancient Heavenly Truth” describes the growth and development patterns of males and females. For males, the age of “eight” marks a stage of change, while for females, the age of “seven” marks a stage of change. The terms “two-eight” and “two-seven” refer to the second stage of change for males and females, respectively. Specifically:

“For males at eight years old, the kidney qi is abundant, hair grows, and teeth are replaced; at two-eight, the kidney qi is vigorous, the heavenly essence (tian gui) arrives, essence overflows, yin and yang are balanced, thus they can have children.”

“For females at seven years old, the kidney qi is vigorous, teeth are replaced, and hair grows; at two-seven, the heavenly essence arrives, the Ren mai (Conception Vessel) is open, the Tai Chong mai (Liver Meridian) is vigorous, menstruation occurs regularly, thus they can have children.”

The heavenly essence (tian gui) refers to the subtle substances that promote and maintain reproductive functions, generated from the abundance of kidney essence, and depleting as the kidney essence diminishes.
