This product is the dried fruit of Forsythia suspensa, a plant from the Oleaceae family. It is primarily produced in Shanxi, Henan, Shaanxi, Hubei, and Shandong. The fruits are harvested in autumn when they are initially ripe and still green, impurities are removed, steamed, and then dried, commonly referred to as “Qingqiao”; when the fruits are fully ripe, they are harvested, dried, and impurities removed, commonly referred to as “Laoqiao”. Qingqiao is best when it is green and not cracked, while LaoQiao is preferred when it is yellowish, with large petals and thick shells. The taste is bitter and slightly cold, and it enters the Lung (Fei), Heart (Xin), and Small Intestine (Xiao Chang) meridians.

Forsythia is bitter and cold in nature, entering the Lung and Heart meridians, it clears and descends while also being able to ascend and disperse, thus it has the function of dispersing wind-heat and reaching the surface. Therefore, it can clear both the interior and exterior of qi and blood. It is commonly used to treat wind-heat colds, initial stages of warm diseases, heat entering the nutritive level, high fever with thirst, delirium with rashes, and other symptoms. It is also effective in clearing the heart and draining fire, expelling toxins, and dispersing blood stasis and qi stagnation, clearing heat and detoxifying while reducing swelling and dispersing nodules. The “Bencao Huiyan” states: “It is primarily used for scrofula, tuberculosis, various sores and abscesses, and when heat toxins are severe, it can disperse before they rupture, and detoxify after they have ruptured.”
It is a key herb for treating external sores and internal abscesses, and is known as the “Holy Medicine for Sores.” It is commonly used for abscesses, scrofula, mastitis, erysipelas, and other conditions. Additionally, Forsythia has the function of clearing the heart and promoting urination, and can also be used to treat painful heat strangury.
