Pediatric Tuina is a healthcare and treatment method based on the diagnostic theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), utilizing techniques such as pushing, pressing, rubbing, and pinching to act on specific acupuncture points and meridians in children. It aims to regulate the internal organs, harmonize Qi and blood, balance Yin and Yang, improve children’s constitution, and enhance the body’s immunity.
Indications:
1. Respiratory system: colds, coughs, fevers, bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis, acute and chronic tonsillitis, chronic bronchitis, etc.
2. Digestive system: anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, intestinal spasms, abdominal pain, abdominal distension, etc.
3. Common pediatric conditions: enuresis, night terrors, crying, eczema, urticaria, delayed growth and development, etc.
Pediatric Tuina commonly employs techniques such as pushing, twisting, rubbing, kneading, pressing, lifting, moving, and pinching the back, characterized by being light, quick, soft, and gentle. Each treatment lasts approximately 15-20 minutes. For acute conditions, a treatment course typically lasts 3-5 days, while chronic conditions are treated over a course of 10 days. It is generally suitable for children under 14 years old, with better results observed in younger children.
Contraindications:
1. Skin injuries such as burns, scalds, abrasions, or lacerations in the area to be treated are not suitable for massage.
2. Certain acute infectious diseases, such as cellulitis and erysipelas.
3. Acute infectious diseases, such as scarlet fever and chickenpox.
4. Presence of trauma, fractures, dislocations, etc.
5. Severe diseases of important organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.
Precautions:
Generally, children should not be massaged when they are overly hungry, full, or agitated; it is more suitable to perform Tuina one hour after meals. During the treatment, a light diet is recommended, with dinner consumed to 80% fullness, and no food intake half an hour before bedtime.
After Tuina, children should avoid drinking cold water for half an hour; warm water is acceptable. Bathing should be avoided for 6 hours, and care should be taken to keep warm and avoid catching a chill.
Some children may sweat after the treatment; it is best to rest for 10 minutes before going outside to prevent catching a cold.
Our hospital has newly established a pediatric TCM health care clinic, a TCM specialty treatment room, and a daytime blue light room, equipped with ECG monitoring, invasive ventilators, CPAP, defibrillators, hearing screening devices, jaundice meters, jaundice treatment lamps, sputum suction machines, infusion pumps, and precision infusion devices. We have also introduced the latest pulmonary function testing systems and neonatal hearing screening systems.
