Efficacy and Optimal Solutions are two different outcomes.

Only focusing on efficacy

without considering the laws of human life

is not being a good doctor.

I believe that what you proposed, Teacher Dong,

that pure warming the middle and yang is unscientific.

The ancients said, “External cold must be dispersed with warmth,”

This is the warming and dispersing method, along with warming and tonifying methods.

Only by combining other treatment methods with warming methods

can we maximize the effect of “warming.”

For example, treating constipation is not solely reliant on purgative methods;

using warming and unblocking methods can also achieve good results.

Is Pure Warming the Middle and Yang Scientific? A Debate on Fu Yang Lun ZhanTeacher DongIs Pure Warming the Middle and Yang Scientific? A Debate on Fu Yang Lun ZhanThere are many methods to treat diseases. Warming the middle and yang is the best solutionbecause it does not harm the righteous qi or the original qi.

When my eldest son was young, I was studying traditional Chinese medicine. One time, he had a sore throat, and according to traditional Chinese medicine thinking, I prescribed him Pu Ji Xiao Du Yin (Universal Detoxifying Decoction). After taking it, his high fever subsided, and sometimes using intravenous therapy combined with Pu Ji Xiao Du Yin could also cure it. However, although he was cured, after treatment, the child had dark circles under his eyes, was weak and lacked energy, and had difficulty walking, easily tripping.

When my second son had a high fever, we used intravenous therapy. However, since he was quite chubby as a child, it was very difficult to find a vein. After a week of intravenous therapy and twenty-four needle insertions, we couldn’t do it ourselves; we were too soft-hearted with our own child, so we went to our local hospital to have a doctor do it. Twenty-four needles! It brought tears to my wife and my mother-in-law. There was no other way; we had to do it, but the high fever still did not subside. Eventually, we took the child back to Xianghe and had the nurses at the Xianghe Chinese Medicine Hospital give him two more intravenous treatments, but there was still no effect. It was truly painful for the child, and it hurt the adults’ hearts. After that, I began to research why daily intravenous therapy could not even bring down a high fever. What methods could allow the child to avoid so much suffering while still curing the illness? After learning about warming the middle and yang, I started using pure warming the middle and yang methods to treat fevers, colds, coughs, etc. The results were immediate; after the first dose of warming the middle and yang medicine, he was better the next day. Since then, my children have never needed intravenous therapy or injections again; when they feel unwell, they just take warming the middle and yang herbal medicine.

In my subsequent clinical practice, for typical Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) syndrome, I resolved it with Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction); for typical Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) syndrome, I resolved it with Si Ni Tang plus ginger water; for typical Ma Huang Tang syndrome, I resolved it with pure warming the middle and yang methods; for typical Chai Hu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) syndrome, I also used warming the middle and yang methods. For example, the Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) syndrome, which is clearly described in the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage), states that after taking Xiao Chai Hu Tang, you will feel, “The upper jiao is unblocked, the fluids descend, and the stomach qi is harmonized.” After taking Li Zhong Si Ni Tang (Four Reversal Decoction), you will feel this way. Therefore, after many years of clinical practice, and reflecting on the wrong paths I have taken, I have concluded that we can use the method of warming the middle and yang to counter a hundred issues, responding to countless changes with a single approach. As a result, all these problems have been resolved, and most importantly, regardless of how we say it, the clinical effects of warming the middle and yang are evident.

This is why for so many years, Teacher Dong’s fans have been adhering to, believing in, and upholding warming the middle and yang, because we have practiced it and it has stood the test of practice.

Just like the same sore throat, there can be three treatment methods: clearing heat and detoxifying is one method, clearing heat, cooling the blood, and benefiting the throat is another method, but my method of warming the middle and yang to assist its ascending and descending circulation is also a method. All three methods can cure the illness, but you cannot say that all three methods are good. So which is the best? Warming the middle and yang! Because it does not harm the body’s righteous qi or original qi. Although the other methods also cured the illness, they may leave hidden troubles in the body.
