According to the Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon), “When the righteous qi is preserved within, evil cannot invade.” The Jing Yue Quan Shu states, “The existence of a person relies entirely on this qi.” From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), righteous qi refers to the body’s ability to resist external evils. TCM believes that the most common external pathogenic factors in nature include wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, and fire. Once these invade the body, illness can occur. Today, I would like to recommend an ancient formula suitable for all ages, the “Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Wind Screen Powder)”. As the name suggests, it serves as a screen to protect oneself from external evils.

【Composition】 Huang Qi (Astragalus), Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes), Fang Feng (Siler)

【Functions】 Tonifies qi, stabilizes the exterior, and stops sweating.

【Indications】 Deficiency of the exterior with spontaneous sweating. Symptoms include sweating that worsens with wind, pale complexion, pale tongue with thin white coating, and floating weak pulse. It is also used for individuals with weak protective barriers who are prone to colds.

【Analysis of the Formula】 In this formula, Huang Qi (Astragalus) tonifies the qi of the spleen and lungs, while also stabilizing the exterior and stopping sweating; Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes) strengthens the spleen and benefits qi; and Fang Feng (Siler) dispels wind evil. The combination of these three herbs is well-balanced, providing the effects of tonifying qi, stabilizing the exterior, stopping sweating, and enhancing righteous qi. Modern medical research has found that Yu Ping Feng San can enhance the body’s immune function and anti-allergic response, increase immunoglobulin levels, improve microcirculation, provide antioxidant effects, regulate cytokines, enhance immune system cell function, and promote cellular metabolism. It is also known as the “gamma globulin” of Chinese medicine.

【Dosage】 Grind into powder, take 9 grams with 1.5 cups of water and three slices of ginger, and decoct. (From Dan Xi Xin Fa). Modern usage: Huang Qi (Astragalus) 30g, Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes) 30g, Fang Feng (Siler) 15g. Boil in 1000mL of water, then simmer on low heat for 40 minutes, taking 300mL of the decoction in 2-3 doses warm.

Precautions: Do not use this formula and dosage without proper TCM diagnosis and treatment. If needed, please visit a qualified hospital for offline diagnosis and treatment to avoid delaying your condition.
