Have you ever experienced this: after squatting for a long time, you suddenly stand up and feel a darkness in front of your eyes, dizziness, and even almost fall? Or after working or studying for a while, you feel your head swelling and your eyes dry and blurry? If you have experienced such phenomena, it is very likely that you have xue xu (blood deficiency)! In TCM theory, blood deficiency usually refers to insufficient blood quality or poor blood circulation, leading to inadequate nourishment of various body parts, which in turn causes a series of symptoms. These symptoms not only affect our quality of life but may also signal other underlying diseases, so caution is warranted!
Common Manifestations of Blood Deficiency
White or Sallow Complexion
One common symptom of blood deficiency is a white or sallow complexion. TCM believes that complexion is an external manifestation of the rise and fall of qi and blood. When there is insufficient blood in the body, the facial skin does not receive adequate nourishment, making it appear pale or sallow. Additionally, patients with blood deficiency may also experience dry hair, numbness in hands and feet, blurred vision, tinnitus, and brittle nails, which are usually due to the blood’s inability to nourish various parts of the body adequately.
Dizziness
Patients with blood deficiency often feel dizzy, especially after standing up or exercising. This is usually due to insufficient blood supply in the body, leading to inadequate oxygen and nutrients to the brain. TCM theory holds that the brain is the residence of the spirit and relies on blood nourishment to maintain clarity and normal function. Therefore, insufficient blood supply to the brain caused by blood deficiency directly affects a person’s mental state and balance.
Palpitations and Vivid Dreams
TCM believes that the heart governs the blood vessels; insufficient heart blood cannot nourish the heart, leading to restlessness and, consequently, palpitations and vivid dreams. Therefore, patients with blood deficiency may experience palpitations and vivid dreams in their daily lives.
Fatigue and Weakness
According to TCM theory, qi and blood are essential substances that sustain human life activities. When the body is blood deficient, the internal organs and limbs lack nourishment, making it easy to experience fatigue and weakness.
Irregular Menstruation
For female friends, blood deficiency can also easily lead to irregular menstruation. TCM holds that menstruation is an important indicator of whether a woman has sufficient qi and blood; blood deficiency leads to a lack of menstrual flow, resulting in irregular menstruation.
