The King of Herbs—Rou Gui (Cinnamon)
The Leader of Formulas—Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction)
“Gui Zhi Tang” is not only the leader among TCM formulas but also the most typical representative of harmonizing medicines↓
Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) is the monarch herb in Gui Zhi Tang, and it comes from the same plant as Rou Gui (Cinnamon). How do we distinguish between the two, and what are their effects? The expert will tell you~
Distinguishing Between Gui Zhi, Gui Pi, and Rou Gui
Gui Zhi and Rou Gui both come from the Cinnamomum cassia tree, while Gui Pi (Cinnamon Bark) comes from other species like Cinnamomum verum. Rou Gui and Gui Zhi are more effective in nourishing the body and treating diseases.
Both Rou Gui and Gui Zhi have the effect of warming Yang and dispelling cold. Rou Gui warms the heart Yang, kidney Yang, and spleen Yang, and can be used to treat internal organ diseases; while Gui Zhi is more focused on treating limb conditions.
Expert Reminder: Both Gui Zhi and Rou Gui can promote blood circulation and dispel blood stasis.
How to Select Rou Gui
When selecting Rou Gui, pay attention to choose thick, dark-colored, oily, and pungent cinnamon.
Uses of Rou Gui
Rou Gui has the effect of warming Yang and dispelling cold. The formula Gui Zhi Fu Zi Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Decoction) can dispel cold from the body and treat pain in muscles and joints caused by rheumatism, as well as chest pain.
Rou Gui also has the effect of “guiding fire back to the source,” which can help the fire that escapes to the upper body due to excess cold in the lower body return to the lower body.
For symptoms of upper heat and lower cold, such as mouth sores and sore throat, but with cold lower limbs, it is recommended to take Jiao Tai Wan (Jiao Tai Pill)↓
Note: In this formula, the dosage of Rou Gui is not fixed. If the fire is strong, you can appropriately increase the amount of Huang Lian (Coptis); if the cold is heavy, you can appropriately increase the amount of Rou Gui.
Recipes Using Rou Gui
Rou Gui Milk Tea
Chef Reminder: When cooking braised meat, do not add Rou Gui too early.
Rou Gui can warm Yang and dispel cold. For those who experience discomfort such as diarrhea after eating cold fruits like watermelon and mango, a cup of Rou Gui tea can alleviate discomfort. The chef also teaches you how to make Rou Gui Apple Pie, let’s learn together↓

Expert Tip: When symptoms of “excess fire” cause gum bleeding, coughing blood, or vomiting blood, it is not advisable to use Rou Gui.
Rou Gui can both warm and tonify kidney Yang, and “guide fire back to the source.” Have you learned how to make delicious dishes?
Health Reminder: Please wear a mask when going out, wash hands frequently, ventilate, and avoid crowded places.
