Compatibility and Contraindications

1. Excessive dosage of Angelica Sinensis decoction or powder may occasionally cause fatigue, drowsiness, etc., which can disappear after stopping the medication.Angelica Sinensis volatile oil injected at acupoints may cause fever, headache, dry mouth, nausea, etc., which can resolve on their own.Large doses can lower blood pressure in experimental animals, and further increases can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure and respiratory arrest.Angelica Sinensis ether extract has strong toxicity, and even small amounts can cause death in experimental animals.Clinical use of Angelica Sinensis should not exceed the recommended dosage, and attention should be paid to any adverse reactions after taking the medicine.2. Allergic reactions have been reported with compound Angelica Sinensis injection causing anaphylactic shock.3. Improper use of Angelica Sinensis, which is pungent and aromatic, is not suitable for those with excessive menstruation, bleeding tendencies, yin deficiency with internal heat, or loose stools.Improper use may exacerbate bleeding and diarrhea symptoms.4. Patients with excessive heat bleeding should avoid taking it, and those with excessive dampness and fullness, as well as loose stools, should use it cautiously.Historical literature on contraindications: 1. “Bencao Jing Jizhu”: Avoid southern reed.2. “Yaoxing Lun”: Avoid calamus, seaweed, and Mu Meng.3. “Bencao Mengquan”: Angelica Sinensis is very slippery, those with diarrhea should avoid it.4. “Leigong’s Preparation and Pharmacology”: For those with initial wind evil and qi stagnation, it should be used sparingly.5. “Bencao Jing Shu”: Those with weak intestines and stomach, diarrhea, and all spleen and stomach diseases should avoid it, and it should not be used during pregnancy or before childbirth.6. “Bencao Zheng”: For those with excessive yin fire, Angelica Sinensis can move blood, which is also not suitable.7. “Bencao Huiyan”: For those with lingering wind-cold, aversion to cold and fever, and external symptoms, it should be avoided.8. “Yaolung Xiaopin”: Not suitable for phlegm, evil heat, and cough symptoms.

Various Discussions

1. “Annotations on the Treatise on Cold Damage”: The pulse is the residence of blood, all blood belongs to the heart, and all those who open the pulse must first tonify the heart and benefit the blood, hence Zhang Zhongjing treated cold limbs with thin pulse and used the bitter warmth of Angelica Sinensis to assist heart blood.2. “Secret of Treatment”: Angelica Sinensis has three uses:It is a heart meridian medicine, harmonizes blood, and treats various diseases that worsen at night. For treating exterior and interior, it must be soaked in wine, which can dissolve hardness; for any blood disease, it must be used. For intolerable eye pain, use Huang Lian and Angelica Sinensis root soaked in wine and decoct. It is also said:When blood is stagnant and does not flow, it causes pain; Angelica Sinensis is pungent and warm to disperse it, allowing qi and blood to return to their respective places.3. Li Gao: Angelica Sinensis head stops bleeding and ascends; the body nourishes blood and guards the center; the tail breaks blood and descends; the whole invigorates blood without dispersing.4. “Tangye Bencao”: Angelica Sinensis enters the hand shaoyin, as the heart governs blood; enters the foot taiyin, as the spleen contains blood; enters the foot jueyin, as the liver stores blood. The head can break blood, the body can nourish blood, the tail can move blood; those who use it should not differentiate, but it is better not to use it at all.If used in full, it can be combined with ginseng and astragalus to tonify blood; if used with Qian Niu Zi and Da Huang, it can break blood; those who use it should know the proper proportions. From Gui, Fu, and Zhu Yu, it is hot; from Da Huang and Mang Xiao, it is cold.Only wine-steamed Angelica Sinensis can treat headaches, as all headaches belong to wood, hence blood medicine governs it.5. “Han’s Medical Communication”: Angelica Sinensis governs blood-related diseases; the strength of the Chuan variety is suitable for attacking, while the Qin variety is soft and suitable for tonifying. For any disease, it should be used with wine, while phlegm should be soaked in ginger juice to guide blood back to its source, as should cooked Rehmannia. For blood deficiency, use ginseng and stone resin as assistants; for blood heat, combine with raw Rehmannia, turmeric, and Huang Qin, without interrupting the source of life; for blood stasis, combine with Da Huang; for women with a robust physique, blood transforms into phlegm, and two varieties of ginger should be soaked, combined with diuretic herbs. In summary, blood medicine cannot do without Angelica Sinensis, hence the ancient formula Si Wu Decoction uses it as the monarch, Bai Shao as the minister, Rehmannia divided into raw and cooked as assistants, and Chuanxiong as the envoy, which can be considered essential.6. “Bencao Huibian”: Angelica Sinensis treats headaches, decocted with wine, to take its clear and floating properties. For treating heart pain, mix the powder with wine, to take its turbid and half-sinking properties. For blood in urine, use wine to decoct, to take its sinking properties; there is a distinction between high and low.Wang Haizang said, Angelica Sinensis is a blood medicine; how to treat cough and reverse qi in the chest? Angelica Sinensis is pungent and disperses, hence it is a qi medicine in blood; moreover, cough and reverse qi have yin deficiency and yang without attachment, thus using blood medicine to tonify yin will harmonize blood and lower qi.7. “Bencao Huiyan”: For diseases that worsen at night, it is a blood disease, and it should be used; for diseases that are cold and weak, yang has no attachment, it should be used.Warm malaria and cold heat are not on the skin or in the muscles, but wash in the skin; observe that the skin is where the nutrient qi meets, prolonged warm malaria leads to nutrient qi deficiency, cold and heat contend, sweating profusely, using blood medicine to nourish the nutrient will harmonize the nutrient and adjust the defense, and with the harmony of nutrient and defense, how can warm malaria not stop?8. “Bencao Zheng”: Angelica Sinensis, with a sweet and heavy taste, can specifically tonify blood; its qi is light and pungent, thus it can also move blood, with tonification within movement and movement within tonification, it is indeed a qi medicine in blood, also a sacred medicine in blood. In general, when used with tonics, it can nourish, thus it can nourish the nutrient and blood, tonify qi and generate essence, calm the five organs, strengthen the body, and benefit the spirit; for any physical weakness, it is suitable. When used with attacking herbs, it can clear pain, promote bowel movement, benefit the muscles and bones, and treat spasms, paralysis, dryness, and other symptoms. For those with nutrient deficiency and unresolved exterior, combine with Chai Hu, Ge Gen, Ma Huang, and Gui to disperse exterior heat, while for those with unresolved exterior, combine with Da Huang and similar herbs to solidify the exterior. As its qi is pungent and moves, those who desire stillness should avoid it; its slippery nature is good for movement, thus those with loose stools should avoid it.For those with excessive yin fire, Angelica Sinensis can move blood, which is also not suitable; for those with yin deficiency and yang deficiency, Angelica Sinensis can nourish blood, thus it is indispensable. If blood stagnates and causes dysentery, it is precisely what should be used; its key lies in the words movement and slipperiness; for women with menstrual stagnation, during labor induction, and postpartum pain, this should be used as the monarch.9. “Bencao Zhengyi”: The Angelica Sinensis body guards, with solid tonification, while the tail governs movement, dispersing stasis; the head governs upward movement, suitable for blood in stool, blood in urine, and excessive bleeding during menstruation, thus it is appropriate to ascend; if there is blood vomiting or bleeding from the nose, the qi and fire rise, thus assisting with warmth is beneficial, is it not like adding wings to a tiger? Therefore, the two words stop bleeding should be applied according to symptoms, and it is essential not to be confined to the word stop and mistakenly believe it is ineffective. Moreover, for all blood loss symptoms, qi and fire agitation disturb the blood vessels, causing it to flow without following its path, which is indeed the majority; Angelica Sinensis has thick qi and flavor, thus when it moves, it is sufficient, but when it guards, it is insufficient.10. “Bencao Xinbian”: Angelica Sinensis, with a sweet and pungent taste, is warm, can ascend and descend, is yin among yang, and is non-toxic.Although there are distinctions between upper and lower, tonifying blood is one.Enters the heart, spleen, and liver meridians. However, its nature is very moving; when used in qi tonics, it tonifies qi, and when used in blood tonics, it tonifies blood, with no fixed efficacy.“Shennong Bencao Jing” states:Sweet, warm.Governs cough and reverse qi, warm malaria, cold heat, and washes in the skin (“Daguang Ben”, wash means to treat), for women with excessive bleeding, various evil sores, and wounds.Decoct for drinking. Also known as dry Angelica.Grows in river valleys.“Wu Pu” states: Angelica Sinensis, Shennong, Huangdi, Tongjun, Bian Que: sweet, non-toxic; Qi Bo, Lei Gong: pungent, non-toxic; Li Shi: slightly warm.Grows in Qiang Hu region.“Ming Yi” states: Grows in Longxi.Harvested in February and August, dried in the shade.Note: “Guangya” states: Mountain Jin, is Angelica Sinensis.“Erya” states: Bi, mountain Jin.Guo Pu states: Now it resembles Jin but is larger. Also, Bi, white Jin, Guo Pu states: This is the upper mountain Jin.“Fan Zi Ji Ran” states: Angelica Sinensis, comes from Longxi. Those without decay are good.
