【Scientific Name】

Bai Shao

【Alias】

Shao Yao, Bai Shao Yao, Jin Shao Yao.

【Properties and Channels】

Nature: Slightly cold; Taste: Bitter, Sour; Channels: Liver (Gan) and Spleen (Pi).

【Functions and Indications】

Indicated for chest and abdominal pain, dysentery with abdominal pain, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, yin deficiency with heat, irregular menstruation, metrorrhagia, and leukorrhea.

【Preparation】

Take the raw herb, remove impurities, separate into large and small pieces, wash clean, soak until semi-transparent, remove and let it moisten until fully transparent, slice thinly, and dry. Sift out fragments.

【Common Usage】

Internal use: Decoction, 5-15g; or in pills or powders. Large doses can be used at 15-30g.

【Common Dietary Therapy】

1. Pain Relief Congee

Ingredients: Huai Shan Yao (Chinese Yam) 120g, roasted Bai Shao 12g, Chen Pi (Dried Tangerine Peel) 6g, Fang Feng (Siler) 6g, brown sugar to taste.

Method: Grind Huai Shan Yao into powder, boil with the decoction of Bai Shao, Chen Pi, and Fang Feng to make congee, and add brown sugar to taste.

Effect: Soothes the liver, tonifies the spleen, alleviates pain and diarrhea.

2. Bai Shao and Goutweed Melon Soup

Ingredients: Bai Shao 2 qian, Gou Teng (Uncaria) 2 qian, winter melon 250g.

Method: Boil Bai Shao and Gou Teng with water for 20 minutes, then add winter melon and continue to simmer until the melon is fully cooked, seasoning to taste.

Effect: Has a calming effect for pain and irritability caused by prolonged use of hands, as well as dizziness.

3. Chai Hu, Bai Shao, and Dan Pi Stewed Lean Meat

Ingredients: Chai Hu (Bupleurum) 6g, Dan Pi (Moutan Root) 6g, Bai Shao 10g, lean pork 30g, seasoning to taste.

Method: Wash Chai Hu, Dan Pi, and Bai Shao, and stew with lean meat until tender, adding seasoning to taste. Drink the soup and eat the meat.

Effect: Soothes the liver, relieves depression, and clears heat.

【Precautions】

Should not be used with Li Lu (Veratrum) and should be used cautiously in cases of deficiency-cold abdominal pain and diarrhea.
