Application of Fire Needle Therapy in Treating Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are a common condition among women, with a high incidence rate. Clinically, they are often accompanied by symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain during menstruation, heavy menstrual flow, prolonged menstrual periods, lower back pain, fatigue, dizziness, and palpitations. In severe cases, they can lead to anemia or infertility. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), they fall under the category of ‘zheng jia’ (症瘕), and TCM believes that uterine fibroids are closely related to disharmony of the internal organs, qi and blood disorders, liver qi stagnation, blood stasis, and phlegm-dampness. Many patients opt for surgical treatment, but acupuncture therapy may be more suitable for many patients.

In the early 1990s, Professor He Purin (a master of acupuncture in China and the founder of the He-style acupuncture method) specifically established clinical research on the treatment of uterine fibroids with “fire needle” therapy, achieving good therapeutic effects and bringing hope to many patients! Professor He fully affirmed this therapy, stating that this condition is “very suitable for fire needle therapy.”

Etiology and Pathogenesis:

In TCM, this condition is diagnosed as either due to liver qi stagnation or spleen deficiency leading to blood stasis, with phlegm obstructing the flow, gradually forming ‘zheng jia’ (症瘕).

Modern research indicates that the essence of TCM’s “blood stasis syndrome” is that the blood is in a state of high viscosity, leading to obstruction of blood circulation in the body or locally, resulting in a series of diseases. Clinical reports show that before treatment, indicators such as whole blood viscosity, red blood cell aggregation index, rigidity index, and hematocrit are significantly elevated. After treatment, all four indicators of blood rheology show improvement.

Research shows that fire needle therapy can improve blood rheology, achieving the goal of resolving stasis and dissipating masses.

Treatment Principles:

Warm and promote yang, warm the uterus and dispel cold, nourish the uterus, regulate the Chong and Ren meridians, soften hardness and disperse masses.

Treatment Methods:

Quchi (曲池), Hegu (合谷), Zhaohai (照海), Pigen (痞根); fire needle puncture below the navel and above the pubic symphysis along the Ren meridian, the Foot Shaoyin Kidney meridian, and the Foot Yangming Stomach meridian.

Explanation of Acupuncture Points:

Puncturing the abdominal Ren meridian, Kidney meridian, and Stomach meridian with fire needles can warm and promote the five abdominal meridians, nourish yin, and support yang, aiming to warm the uterus and expel cold, primarily treating urogenital system diseases. Pigen is an extraordinary point outside the meridians, specifically for removing abdominal masses, and moxibustion can dissipate these masses. The “Introduction to Medicine” states: “Specifically treats masses, three and a half inches below the thirteen vertebrae, mostly moxibustion on the left side; if both sides are present, moxibustion on both sides.” The “Yulong Fu” states: “Hegu and Zhaohai can treat abdominal masses.” Zhaohai also has the effect of removing abdominal masses. Together with Quchi, Hegu, and Zhaohai, they invigorate blood circulation, resolve stasis, and eliminate masses, collectively achieving the function of softening hardness and dispersing masses. Therapeutic Effects of Fire Needle Therapy:

Fire needle therapy is administered three times a week, with 12 sessions constituting one treatment course; generally requiring 2-3 treatment courses (approximately 2-3 months).

For patients with milder conditions, significant clinical symptom improvement, noticeable reduction in fibroids, or even disappearance can be observed after just one treatment course.

According to research conducted by Professor He and his disciples on 50 patients, after three treatment courses:

Recovery (clinical symptoms disappeared, uterus returned to normal, fibroids completely disappeared) was achieved in 14%,

Significant improvement (clinical symptoms significantly improved, the sum of the three diameters of the uterus reduced by more than 2.5 cm, or fibroids reduced by more than 2 cm) in 36%,

Effective (clinical symptoms significantly improved, the sum of the three diameters of the uterus reduced by 1.5-2.5 cm, or fibroids reduced by less than 2 cm) in 34%,

With a total effective rate of about 84%.

In recent years, some acupuncture practitioners have achieved even better results with fire needle therapy. For fibroids with a diameter of less than 5 cm, clinical recovery or near recovery has reached 85%.

Summary: Uterine fibroids are a condition where fire needle therapy shows significant advantages, as its efficacy is superior to other therapies. Practical verification shows significant efficacy, no side effects, and improvement in patient constitution, truly a “good method.” Uterine fibroid patients can prioritize fire needle therapy, especially those who cannot undergo surgical treatment, achieving good therapeutic effects.

Currently, there are very few doctors using fire needle therapy for gynecological diseases, and even many specialized doctors lack understanding and have doubts about the efficacy of fire needle therapy. The Xi’an Zhongbaotang Medical Research Institute and the Xi’an He-style Acupuncture TCM Clinic have inherited and applied Professor He’s He-style acupuncture method in clinical practice, collecting a wealth of clinical experience, achieving great success in treating gynecological diseases with fire needle therapy, especially in treating uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, infertility, vulvar leukoplakia, cervical erosion, and other gynecological diseases.
