“During an episode, my neck becomes stiff and rigid, as if tied with ropes, with a feeling of tightness, radiating to my scalp, making it indescribably uncomfortable.” Aunt Zhou, who lives in Xuhui Binjiang, has suffered from cervical spondylosis for many years and has tried various treatment methods with unsatisfactory results. Unexpectedly, her long-standing ailment was effectively treated at a small community health service station.
Recently, while strolling around her neighborhood, Aunt Zhou accidentally saw that the Xuhui District Xietu Street Community Health Service Center’s Binjiang Community Health Service Station offered specialized Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments for cervical spondylosis. With a mindset of giving it a try, Aunt Zhou entered the station. After diagnosis, Dr. Chen Xiaolei recommended TCM mào huǒ zhēn (fire needle) therapy.
Dr. Chen Xiaolei operated the fire needle quickly and accurately, and during the withdrawal of the needle, he immediately pressed the acupuncture point with a dry cotton ball, significantly reducing pain and enhancing the patient’s treatment experience, alleviating the fear of fire needle therapy. After three treatments, Aunt Zhou experienced significant relief from her pain, happily stating: “It’s amazing! This old problem has troubled me for so many years, and I finally feel better, plus there was no discomfort during the acupuncture process, and I am very satisfied with the treatment results.”
It is reported that the Xietu Street Community Health Service Center, based on prior research collaboration with the Acupuncture Department of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has specially invited Professor Xu Shifen as a guiding expert. In diagnosis and teaching, the academic thought of the Lingnan acupuncture school has been introduced, developing the Lingnan mào huǒ zhēn (fire needle) therapy, creating a brand of TCM specialty therapy.
As a key promoted TCM technology project, since August 2023, Lingnan mào huǒ zhēn has been implemented at the Binjiang Community Health Service Station. It mainly targets TCM advantageous diseases such as cervical spondylosis, rotator cuff syndrome, chronic nonspecific low back pain, sciatica, and myofascial pain syndrome, with patients reporting significant efficacy. Based on this, combined with the family doctor team’s popular science promotion, the Lingnan mào huǒ zhēn therapy has formed a mature system with considerable influence as a TCM specialty external treatment method at the Binjiang Community Health Service Station.
“Lingnan mào huǒ zhēn is a specialized technique where the fire needle can directly and quickly deliver ‘heat’ to the treatment area, achieving ‘warming’, ‘unblocking’, ‘supplementing’, ‘eliminating’, and ‘clearing’ effects. It has unique advantages, especially for stubborn pain, numbness, stiffness, and spasms related to bone and joint diseases,” Professor Xu Shifen explained.
The indications for mào huǒ zhēn therapy mainly target cold syndromes and bi syndromes, with its analgesic advantages concentrated in orthopedics, dermatology, and neurology. Since in most cases it does not require needle retention, one of its advantages over other acupuncture techniques is that it is time-efficient, making it a simple, low-cost, and effective acupuncture therapy. Doctors remind that fire needle therapy should not be performed in cases of mental tension, hunger, fatigue, intoxication, or physical weakness; it should be used cautiously in diabetic patients, those with scar constitution or allergic constitution, high fever, and on the face; it is contraindicated for those with coagulation disorders. If mild redness, burning, slight pain, or itching occurs at the treatment site, it is a normal phenomenon and does not require treatment.
