Damp-Heat Syndrome: High fever and thirst, yellow or scorched red tongue, convulsions, delirium or laughter, evil heat burning the pericardium, and depletion of nutritive and blood. Suitable herbs include Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn), Lianqiao (Forsythia), Shengdi (Rehmannia), Yuanshen (Ophiopogon), Gouteng (Uncaria), Yinhua (Honeysuckle), Shenchangpu (Acorus), and Zhibao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill).
Note: The previous section mentioned convulsions, while this section discusses syncope. The heat from summer and dampness injures Yang Qi.
Commentary: This refers to the initial invasion of evil, which must first damage the Yang aspect and injure Qi. When heat becomes extreme, it forces its way into the nutritive Yin.
Commentary: Although dampness is present, over time it has transformed into heat, and when Qi cannot clear it, it will inevitably invade the nutritive aspect. This leads to depletion of fluids and Yin, burning the pericardium, causing confusion of the spirit. The treatment should focus on clearing heat, rescuing Yin, draining evil, and pacifying the liver.
Commentary: Confusion and delirium are signs of impending syncope.
Qinglong Summary: High fever and thirst, damp-heat transforming into heat, yellow and scorched dry red tongue, Qi and blood both burning with heat and depleting fluids; convulsions, wind movement in the Jueyin Liver Meridian; delirium or laughter, evil Qi directly attacking the pericardium, hence the abnormal spirit. Therefore, considering all symptoms, it is determined to be damp-heat transforming into heat, with Qi entering the nutritive aspect, heat encircling the pericardium and stirring wind as the pathogenesis; Xijiao and Lingyangjiao enter the heart and liver respectively, clearing heart heat, extinguishing liver wind, detoxifying, and cooling the blood; Shengdi and Yuanshen cool the blood and nourish Yin, Gouteng, Yinhua, and Lianqiao extinguish wind, detoxify, and release heat outward, while Shenchangpu opens the orifices; combined with Zhibao Dan to aromatically open the orifices and transform turbidity. Thus, both Qi and blood are cleared, Yin is restored, and the convulsions and confusion will resolve.
