Water buffalo horn is the horn of the water buffalo, which is commonly seen by the public, but many may not be aware of its numerous medicinal values. Below, we will introduce its uses, especially suitable for those who live far from hospitals or pharmacies and find it inconvenient to buy medicine. For those who can easily access medicine, it is still better to purchase it.
Water buffalo horn is the horn of the Bovidae family. After harvesting the horn, it is boiled, the core is removed, and then dried. It is raised in most parts of the country, particularly in the southern rice paddy regions.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), water buffalo horn is bitter and cold, entering the heart and liver meridians. It can clear heat, detoxify, cool the blood, and calm convulsions. Water buffalo horn is tough, smooth, and durable, making it easy to process. Water buffalo horn is pungent, salty, and cold. The pungent nature disperses and moves qi, invigorates blood, and nourishes; the salty nature softens and moistens; the cold nature clears heat and detoxifies, thus having the effects of dispersing qi, clearing heat, detoxifying, and invigorating blood. Its medicinal properties are similar to those of rhinoceros horn, often serving as a substitute. Jade is sweet and neutral, entering the lung meridian, moistening the heart and lungs, and clearing lung heat. The “Compendium of Materia Medica” states that jade can clear hoarseness, stop thirst, calm wheezing, soothe the spirit, and nourish the five organs. In ancient times, jade products were often worn on the wrist, neck, and chest. Both water buffalo horn and jade gua sha boards help to move qi and invigorate blood, and open the meridians.
