Since the Rio Olympics last year,
Cupping!
This health method, known as “Eastern witchcraft,”
has become the most popular treatment among American Olympic gymnasts!
However, in China,
cupping is a very common health practice.
Any massage or foot therapy place
or beauty salon offers this service.
Yet, this seemingly ordinary health practice
has recently caused a big problem for Mr. Hu in Wuhan!
Recently, he wanted to use a vacuum cupping device at home, but the worst happened: the jar was sucked on too tightly and could not be removed! After trying various methods,he finally called the firefighters for help…
The jar suddenly couldn’t be removed…
Mr. Hu lives in the Qiaokou District of Wuhan, and his family has a vacuum cupping device. All he had to do was place the jar on his back or leg, use the suction piston to remove the air inside, and the jar would stick to his body. After a while, he could press the piston at the top of the jar to release it, which is similar to traditional cupping.
On the evening of the 22nd, around 8 PM, he was lying on the sofa, and his wife, Grandma Ma, was helping him with cupping on his back as usual. However, one jar was sucked on too tightly, and Grandma Ma couldn’t remove it no matter what!
This made Grandma Ma anxious, and she hurriedly found a hammer and pliers, but no matter how she hit the jar, it wouldn’t budge. Mr. Hu also panicked and ran downstairs to a clinic for help, but the doctor was also unable to assist.
Firefighters Skillfully Remove the Jar!
That night, around 9 PM, his son and daughter-in-law rushed back and took him to the emergency department of the hospital. By this time, the area of Mr. Hu’s back where the jar was stuck had swollen by 5 centimeters, and fluid was leaking out. The doctor suggested he seek help from the fire brigade next door.
At the fire brigade, four firefighters brought a saw and quickly cut the jar open. Mr. Hu immediately felt the skin on his back loosen, and then the doctor treated his wound.

The jar was finally removed, and Mr. Hu was relieved. He used his experience to tell everyone: Friends with vacuum cupping devices at home should really be careful; do not over-suction, as it can get too tight.
Now, more and more people
are choosing to do cupping therapy at home.
After cupping a couple of jars, they instantly feel revitalized.
But cupping seems simple,
if not done properly, accidents can occur.
Especially with fire cupping, one must be cautious.

Case 1:A woman at a wellness center underwent fire cupping for 9 consecutive days, 3 times a day, for 40 minutes each time, andended up with two rows of “black holes” on her back!
Case 2:Last year, an elderly man in Chengdu treated his shoulder periarthritis by undergoing fire cupping for 1 hour daily at a massage parlor. After a month, his back became ulcerated and infected, and he was nearly in critical condition after timely medical intervention!
In fact, fire cupping is not about doing it more or more frequently; it depends on individual constitution and symptoms.
Today, let’s discuss some basic knowledge about fire cupping.
Who Should Avoid Cupping?
For example, patients with skin diseases, bleeding disorders, local tumors, high blood pressure, or weak constitutions should avoid cupping. Cupping is also not suitable for large arteries such as the carotid artery and heart.
What is the Frequency and Duration of Cupping?
Generally, the frequency of fire cupping should not be too high. If the marks from previous cupping have not faded, cupping again can easily cause local damage.
Typically, the marks need about 5-7 days to fade, and each cupping session should last about 5-10 minutes, while some individuals may require 15 minutes.
Do Deeper Cupping Marks Indicate More Dampness?
Not necessarily!
All cupping will leave marks. The color of the marks after cupping mainly depends on individual constitution, duration of cupping, and the practitioner’s technique, and cannot be the sole basis for identifying constitution.
Cupping Precautions
1. Assessment Before Cupping
If there is any discomfort, one must go to a proper hospital. After a professional diagnosis by a doctor, it can be determined whether cupping treatment is necessary. Since everyone’s constitution and the nature of their illness differ, not everyone is suitable for cupping, making professional medical assessment very important.
2. Cupping Equipment Must Be Regularly Disinfected
Cupping devices come into contact with the skin and must be cleaned and disinfected regularly, especially after bloodletting cupping, as the cups may have blood stains. Used cups need to be sterilized to prevent cross-infection.
3. Avoid Repeated Cupping on the Same Spot in a Short Time
In a short time, cupping should only be performed once on the same skin area. The example mentioned earlier about the “black holes” on the back was due to repeated cupping on the same spot in a short time, leading to local tissue damage that had not fully healed, resulting in infection.
4. Patients with Skin Diseases and Pregnant Women Should Avoid Cupping
Patients with allergies, ulcers, edema, and those in areas with large blood vessel distributions should avoid cupping. Individuals with high fever and convulsions, as well as pregnant women, should also avoid cupping on the abdomen and lower back.
5. Be Careful to Avoid Burns During Cupping
If burns occur or if the cup is left on too long causing blisters, small blisters do not require treatment; just cover with disinfected gauze to prevent rupture. For larger blisters, it is best to seek timely medical treatment to prevent infection.
6. After Cupping, Wait at Least Four Hours Before Showering
Showering immediately after cupping can easily lead to skin damage and inflammation. Cold showers should be avoided, as the skin’s pores are open, making it easy to catch a cold and develop wind-cold. One should also avoid direct exposure to air conditioning or fans!
Do not casually perform cupping!
