Ping Shun Lu Dang Shen (Ping Shun Codonopsis) is not only a precious Chinese medicinal material but also one of the key protected geographical indication products by the Ministry of Agriculture of China. Ping Shun County relies on high-quality spring water, fertile soil, and a special climate to provide unique conditions for the cultivation of Lu Dang Shen. The Lu Dang Shen produced in Ping Shun is a premium product, known as the “King of Lu Dang Shen”.For generations, farmers in Ping Shun County have had a tradition of cultivating and harvesting medicinal herbs, but the production scale of Lu Dang Shen has always been small and fragmented, failing to achieve its potential benefits.
In recent years, Ping Shun County has established the “Shanxi Changzhi Medicinal Herb Logistics Base” and adopted a model of government guarantees, rural cooperation, enterprise investment, and shared benefits to form a comprehensive industrial development pattern that integrates planting, marketing, storage, and processing of medicinal herbs throughout the county. Demonstration parks for planting and breeding have been established, and wild resource cultivation and standardized transformation of varieties have been carried out to help the people escape poverty; a 500,000-acre medicinal herb processing base has been established to improve the medicinal herb industry chain while also creating jobs for farmers and forming cooperatives to provide farmers with market protection prices.
As the scale of Lu Dang Shen cultivation in the county continues to expand, market sales are gradually becoming secure. Ping Shun County is also working on improving quality. In experimental fields, Lu Dang Shen is managed according to size, appearance, and growth period to meet different market demands, promoting the Lu Dang Shen industry to grow larger and better. With the fragrance of herbs opening up paths to poverty alleviation and prosperity, as of now, Ping Shun County has planted various medicinal herbs, including Lu Dang Shen, covering 627,600 acres, which has increased the income of 35,000 impoverished people by an average of 4,100 yuan in 2019.
According to the “Ben Cao Zheng Yi”, it is recorded that “Dang Shen… is not very different from Ren Shen (Ginseng). Its most valuable qualities are that it strengthens the spleen and promotes fluid metabolism without being drying, nourishes the stomach yin without being damp, moistens the lungs without causing cold, and nourishes the blood without being overly rich… Therefore, all the formulas from ancient to modern times that use Ren Shen can be replaced by Lu Dang Shen.”

Ping Shun Lu Dang Shen strips are long and cylindrical, measuring about 5-10 cm in length and 1-2 cm in diameter. The heaviest single strip of Ping Shun Lu Dang Shen can weigh up to 400 grams, with a thicker texture and pure taste.
