Spleen Qi deficiency and stomach cold are exhausting!
The change in weather directly affects our bodies, leading to discomfort such as easily catching colds, invasion of cold pathogens, and spleen and stomach weakness.
Especially as we enter autumn and winter, health maintenance should focus onexpelling cold and tonifying Yang. Many people now suffer from stomach cold, a chronic condition that is not easily improved.
Stomach cold can be classified as deficiency or excess; self-assess which type you have.
Stomach cold is a symptom caused by poor dietary habits, such as irregular eating, frequently consuming cold drinks or cold foods. Coupled with the fast pace of life and high mental stress, it is easier to develop stomach issues.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) classifies stomach cold into deficiency and excess types.
Excess Stomach Cold
Excess cold occurs when cold pathogens invade the stomach, often triggered by exposure to cold or excessive consumption of raw and cold foods.
Symptoms: Cold sensation in the upper abdomen, cold pain, fullness, or even severe pain, worsened by cold and relieved by warmth.
Characteristics: Rapid onset, short duration, and severe condition. Treatment should focus on warming the stomach, dispelling cold, and relieving pain, possibly using the formula Hou Po Wen Zhong Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction) under a physician’s guidance.
Deficiency Stomach Cold
Deficiency stomach cold is caused by Yang deficiency of the spleen and stomach, leading to weakened digestive function. Most cases of “stomach cold” belong to this type.
Symptoms: Dull cold pain in the abdomen, preference for warmth and gentle pressure, lack of thirst, poor appetite, abdominal distension after eating, cold extremities, loose stools, and worsening symptoms with cold food.
Characteristics: Long duration, slower progression. Treatment should focus on warming the middle, tonifying the spleen, and dispelling cold, possibly using the formula Fu Zi Li Zhong Wan (Aconite Decoction) under a physician’s guidance.
What good methods do we have to improve stomach cold? We invited National Senior Rehabilitation TherapistXu Kongyun to share his “tips” with us. He mentioned a method that can effectively improve stomach cold without injections or medications.
What is the “treasure” that Dr. Xu refers to?
It turns out to be aheat pack~
Dr. Kong said that the method of heat application is very simple, just place the “heat pack” on the “Shen Que point” (the navel) position, one hour before meals and half an hour after meals. That’s all you need to do.
The navel is the most important acupuncture point in the body. Placing the heat pack on the navel can help warm and tonify Yang Qi, and regulate the stomach and intestines.Heat application primarily increases the local skin temperature, relaxes the muscles, dilates the skin capillaries, and improves local and overall blood circulation, enhancing local resistance.
Many people may ask
what should be placed inside the heat pack
to maximize the effect of improving stomach cold?
It turns out to becoarse salt!
Coarse salt, also known as mineral salt.
After being sun-dried, coarse salt absorbs the essence of nature and has a stronger warming effect. Heat the coarse salt in a pan over low heat, then place it in a bag.
Heated coarse salt has strong heat retention and permeability, which can not only penetrate warmth into the body but also draw out pathogenic cold and Qi, aiding in strengthening the body and expelling pathogens, promoting recovery from illness. For those with stomach cold and deficiency, placing the heated coarse salt bagon the navel can warm Yang, dispel cold, and regulate the stomach and intestines.
After cooling, it can be reheated in the microwave for multiple uses, without needing to replace the coarse salt inside, making it simple and convenient.
Warm reminder: This method is not suitable for those with skin ulcers or abdominal wounds.
