Fire in the five organs can present with different clinical manifestations. By observing the condition of the five senses, one can identify the issues.
Heart fire is observed through the mouth, liver fire through the eyes, lung fire through the nose, spleen fire through the teeth, and kidney fire through the ears.
Today, let’s discuss how to eliminate fire from the five organs through TCM diagnosis and treatment.
First, heart fire is observed through the mouth.
In TCM, the tongue is the orifice of the heart. When heart fire is excessive, it can lead to mouth sores, oral ulcers, a red and swollen painful tongue, along with symptoms such as irritability, insomnia, and painful, yellow, burning urination.
When heart fire is excessive, Daohong San (Guide Red Powder) can be used to clear heart fire.
Second, liver fire is observed through the eyes.
The liver opens to the eyes. If liver fire is strong, it can cause redness, swelling, and pain in the eyes, along with increased eye discharge, dry mouth, bitter taste, insomnia with vivid dreams, and irritability.
At this time, it is necessary to clear the liver and drain fire, which can be done using Longdan Cao (Gentian) Decoction with modifications.
Third, lung fire is observed through the nose.
The lungs open to the nose. Individuals with lung fire may experience nasal redness and swelling, along with cough, yellow phlegm, dry throat, and thirst.
In such cases, Xiebai San (White Drain Powder) can be used for treatment.
Fourth, spleen fire is observed through the mouth.
The spleen opens to the mouth. When there is spleen and stomach fire, symptoms may include swollen and painful gums, dry mouth, bad breath, bloating, acid reflux, and constipation.
This is often caused by excessive consumption of spicy and greasy foods, so Qingwei San (Stomach Clearing Powder) can be used for treatment.
Finally, kidney fire is observed through the ears.
Kidney fire generally refers to deficiency fire, which is caused by yin deficiency leading to internal heat.
The kidneys open to the ears. If there is excessive yin deficiency fire, symptoms may include tinnitus, dizziness, weakness in the lower back and knees, five hearts heat, insomnia, and night sweats.
At this time, we need to nourish kidney yin and lower deficiency fire, typically using Zhibai Dihuang Tang (Anemarrhena and Rehmannia Decoction) with modifications for treatment.
