Among the various “aftereffects” of COVID-19, the most reported issue is a dry cough with some phlegm. Today, Dr. Luo will further explain this issue in the audio, and everyone is welcome to listen~

To resolve a cough, it is essential to first differentiate between cold and heat. Often, a persistent cough is due to inappropriate medication.

Observing the tongue, if it is red with little or no coating, and the phlegm is slightly yellow, it can generally be judged as a heat cough due to lung dryness and yin deficiency. This condition requires nourishing yin and moistening dryness, and the previously introduced Qingzao Jiaoliu Decoction (清燥救肺汤) can be used, substituting the ginseng with American ginseng and adding 6 grams each of honeysuckle (Jin Yin Hua) and forsythia (Lian Qiao).

Qingzao Jiaoliu Decoction: Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf) (frosted, remove branches and stems, clean leaves) 9g, Shi Gao (Gypsum) (calcined) 8g, Gan Cao (Licorice), Hu Ma Ren (Sesame Seed) (roasted, ground), Zhen A Jiao (True Donkey-hide Gel) and Pi Pa Ye (Loquat Leaf) (brushed to remove hairs, honey-coated, roasted yellow) each 3g, Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon) (remove heart) 4g, Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Xing Ren (Apricot Kernel) (soaked, peeled, roasted yellow) each 2g.

The residual cough after a cold is mostly due to cold pathogens. In this case, the tongue appears pale with a thin white coating (if the coating is thick, dampness must be eliminated first). For more severe cold coughs, the previously introduced formula by Lin He and the old doctor focuses on dispersing cold. For less severe cold coughs, the previously introduced Zhi Sou San (止嗽散) can be used.

Lin He’s Formula: Xi Xin (Asarum) 3g, Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra) 5g, Bo He (Mint) 9g, She Gan (Belamcanda) 9g, Fa Ban Xia (Pinellia) 9g, Xing Ren (Apricot Kernel) 9g, Zhi Qiao (Bitter Orange) 9g, Jie Geng (Platycodon) 9g, Sha Shen (Adenophora) 9g, Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) 6g, Gua Lou Pi (Trichosanthes Fruit Peel) 10g, Gan Cao (Licorice) 3g. The 9g dosage is for convenience and can be adjusted to 10g; Gua Lou Pi can be replaced with whole Gua Lou.

If there is a mixed cold-heat condition, 6g of Huang Qin (Scutellaria) and 9g of Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark) can be added, which is generally recommended.

Zhi Sou San: Jie Geng (Platycodon) 6g, Jing Jie (Schizonepeta) 6g, Zi Wan (Aster) 6g, Bai Bu (Stemona) 6g, Bai Qian (Cynanchum) 6g, Gan Cao (Licorice) 6g, Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) 6g. Generally, it is paired with Zhi Sou San, and Bai Bu can be replaced with Kuan Dong Hua (Coltsfoot Flower). It is also recommended to combine with 6g of Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle) and 6g of Lian Qiao (Forsythia).

One can also use some Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) paired with Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf) to brew tea, possibly adding some Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle).

Most of the time, it is necessary to balance cold and heat, and adjustments should be made flexibly according to the specific situation.

For more detailed content, please listen to the exciting explanation in Dr. Luo’s audio. I hope everyone can successfully resolve their various residual symptoms.
