Blood circulates throughout our body, and the health of our blood is key to our overall well-being. When blood issues arise, they can lead to various health problems, such as: blood deficiency causing insomnia, blood turbidity leading to blockages, and blood stasis resulting in tumors. Today, the doctor shares three traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulas to help nourish blood, clear blood turbidity, and resolve blood stasis.
First, let’s discuss blood deficiency and insomnia
Blood deficiency, also known as xue xu (血虚), primarily refers to the deficiency of blood in the heart or liver. In TCM, the heart houses the spirit, and when heart blood is deficient, it leads to a lack of nourishment for the spirit, resulting in restlessness and difficulty falling asleep. The liver, which stores blood, acts as the body’s natural blood reservoir, responsible for regulating and storing blood. Once liver blood is deficient, the entire body loses the nourishment of blood, with the most noticeable symptoms being frequent insomnia, vivid dreams, especially waking up between 1-3 AM, along with dry eyes, numbness in the limbs, pale complexion, dizziness, headaches, palpitations, and irritability. At this time, one can consider using Si Wu Tang (四物汤), which has the effects of nourishing blood, calming the heart, and soothing the liver.
Next, let’s talk about blood turbidity causing blockages
Blood turbidity refers to an excess of impurities in the blood, such as phlegm-dampness and lipids. When these substances accumulate, they can block blood vessels, particularly in the cardiovascular system, leading to conditions such as myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction. TCM believes that when there is blockage, there is pain; thus, localized pain may occur, accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, chest tightness and pain, poor appetite, thick and greasy tongue coating, abdominal bloating, and sticky stools. At this time, one can consider using Wen Dan Tang (温胆汤), which has the effect of resolving phlegm and clearing turbidity.
Finally, let’s discuss blood stasis leading to tumors
Blood stasis refers to an excess of blood clots in the blood, resulting in increased viscosity and slowed flow, which can lead to the formation of nodules and hyperplasia in the body over time, potentially inducing tumors. Common symptoms include a dull complexion, purple lips, cold hands and feet, limb pain, and dark purple or black veins under the tongue. It is crucial to promote blood circulation and resolve stasis promptly, and one can consider using Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang (血府逐瘀汤) for this purpose.
