The Twelve Meridians - A TCM Theory Not Yet Proven by Modern Science | Huang Chengyi

Introduction: Huang Chengyi, also known as Yue Mei Ju Shi, is a resident of Taoyuan, Taiwan, and is over seventy years old. He is one of the “Three Swordsmen of TCM” in Taiwan. Teacher Huang claims to be a practitioner of the Liu Yin school of TCM, where the pathological system of TCM connects the principles of heaven and earth. With years of authentic clinical practice, his theoretical and practical foundation is very profound. He is referred to as “Dong Xie Huang Yaoshi” by TCM enthusiasts in mainland China. In his youth, he received guidance from a master and gained unique insights into TCM pathology, integrating classical formulas and warm disease theories. He has been teaching and practicing in Taiwan for over forty years, often attracting many students. Not only does he provide medical care, but he also focuses on the study of medical principles and techniques, authoring works such as “Medical Forest Catastrophe,” “Reliance on Medicine,” “Warm Wind Strange Fate,” “Guide to TCM Formulas,” “Warm Disease Compilation,” and “Pathological Analysis of Shang Han Lun.” His self-created “Hair Dryer Therapy” once became popular in the Chinese-speaking world, showing remarkable effects on nearly a hundred common diseases! After decades of teaching, he has over twenty thousand disciples and students worldwide. The Twelve Meridians – A TCM Theory Not Yet Proven by Modern Science At the hour of the Rat, the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian operates; at the hour of the Ox, the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian operates; at the hour of the Tiger, the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian operates; at the hour of the Rabbit, the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian operates; at the hour of the Dragon, the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian operates; at the hour of the Snake, the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian operates; at the hour of the Horse, the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian operates; at the hour of the Goat, the Hand Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian operates; at the hour of the Monkey, the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian operates; at the hour of the Rooster, the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian operates; at the hour of the Dog, the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian operates; at the hour of the Pig, the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian operates; this operation refers to the exchange of Qi and blood between the meridians and the nourishing Qi. At other times, it is a minor operation. Therefore, any abnormalities during a specific time indicate issues with the corresponding organ, and one should seek solutions promptly.

For example, milk can harm the stomach, so those who drink milk may experience issues between 7 AM and 11 AM, the most common being loss of appetite. Additionally, restlessness at midnight indicates problems with the liver and gallbladder, which is most evident in infants. Infants do not know what they should be doing at that time; they only know they are uncomfortable, leading to crying and fussing at midnight! Adults should not take this lightly.

It is often said, “What infant does not cry? This is normal!” I do not bother to respond to such ignorant individuals, just as today’s young girls believe that all classmates experience menstrual pain, which is normal.

Is that right? After all, it is you who is in pain, not me. What does it matter to me! The foolish officials even legislated for menstrual leave, and the official doctors are so confused to this extent; how can ordinary people understand?

The Twelve Meridians, along with the Ren and Du meridians, and the Eight Extraordinary Meridians, form a vast network of meridians throughout the body. This knowledge is detailed in acupuncture texts. However, the problem lies here: do these meridians operate on kidney Qi? Or something else? Each text discusses this separately, lacking coherence, leaving later scholars confused. From what I know, the clinical manifestations do not align with what is stated in the texts, so everyone might as well refer to this. The Lung governs the skin and hair; the Stomach Qi enters the Lung, and the Lung disperses the Stomach Qi to the skin and hair, with oxygen obtained directly from the atmosphere. Some research reports state that “the skin can breathe,” which actually refers to this, but it only applies to the skin and hair. Its metabolic waste is directly expelled from the body, and its regeneration rate is extremely high. It does not require nourishing Qi; the replacement of dead skin is inconsequential. As long as the Stomach Qi is sufficient, the skin will be healthy. Why bother with beauty treatments? Those fools should be ignored. When Stomach Qi is insufficient, the skin often cracks, and some may even bleed. In such cases, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) is an excellent formula. Some may have cracked and bled, unable to walk due to pain; in such cases, it is urgent to apply juice from citrus peels, which is quite effective. Dried tangerine peel, known as Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), is a Qi-regulating herb, so its juice is an excellent Qi-regulating medicine. The Lung governs Qi, so it is urgent to replenish its deficiency, which is a symptomatic treatment.

The Large Intestine governs the excretion of waste, including sweat glands and the anterior and posterior yin. When Lung Qi moves, Large Intestine Qi also moves, and the metabolic waste accumulated overnight must be expelled quickly. Once these waste materials are emptied, they must be replenished immediately; hence, the Stomach Qi moves! Modern people do not sleep at night, do not get up during the day, and skip breakfast, completely violating the rules of nature. It is no wonder they fall ill. The Spleen and Stomach govern the muscles; muscle is white, and flesh is red. Muscles store the essence of the Spleen and Stomach, making them strong. However, the Stomach is the organ that produces phlegm. Excess phlegm accumulates in the muscles, leading to obesity, which is commonly said to be caused by overeating. Therefore, phlegm elimination is one method of weight loss. However, phlegm is the lubricant of the Stomach, and it is said in medicine that “the Stomach relies on phlegm for nourishment,” so phlegm should not be completely eliminated, as doing so would harm the Stomach. Earth can control Water; if the Earth is weak, it will accumulate water and not circulate. This type of obesity is actually a symptom of edema, most commonly seen in children who drink milk, as milk can moisten the Spleen, lubricate the intestines, and cause stagnation. After weaning for a few years, the water dissipates, and many children are left with skin and bones. The saying goes, “Being chubby as a child does not mean being chubby later,” referring to such individuals. However, some with insufficient Stomach Qi are even worse off, as they eat continuously, have a large appetite, and their families insist on restricting their food intake to reduce their weight, not realizing that these individuals have very poor gastrointestinal health. They eat a lot and drink a lot, absorbing water but not nutrients, leading to a vicious cycle of increased appetite and pseudo-obesity. People are often deceived by the symptom of “great appetite.” If you do not believe it, just give such individuals water to drink, and they will still gain weight; if you do not urgently open the water pathways to eliminate water, it is futile. Merely opening the water pathways without addressing the dampness of the Spleen and Stomach and improving gastrointestinal function is also in vain. Generally, people believe that patients with good appetites should also strengthen their Spleen and Stomach. Is this a misunderstanding? However, from the perspective of TCM, when the Spleen and Stomach’s ability to absorb and assimilate is insufficient, it is classified as Spleen and Stomach disease, which is relatively difficult to treat. Stomach ulcers or other symptoms are easier to manage, unlike Western medicine, which interprets symptoms superficially, believing that “if there is no pain or growth, there is no disease,” and considers normal digestion as health, which is rather superficial! Such individuals may have good appetites as a self-response, drawing on Stomach Qi for self-rescue, but they eat without absorption, and therein lies the problem. The same applies to patients with deficiency patterns, but this disease is fatal. Elderly individuals often feel unsatisfied with their food intake. So, is it not a disease when someone has a great appetite? If you do not treat their illness and instead restrict their food, are you not hastening their demise? Many who fail at weight loss belong to this type, and the severe cases may even lead to death. When the Stomach Qi moves, the Heart Fire must assist, and the intestines must peristalsis and begin to function, leading to increased metabolic waste, which is normal. When the nourishing Qi flows, the Small Intestine also operates. At noon, the blood and Qi are at their peak, and it is most unwise to engage in strenuous exercise at this time. Therefore, the mortality rate of traffic accidents at noon is higher, which is also the reason. Practitioners of Daoism advocate not eating after noon to nourish Stomach Qi, as after noon, Heart Fire gradually weakens, reducing its assistance to intestinal peristalsis. Intense exercise increases heart rate, leading to faster intestinal peristalsis, and hunger follows. Exercising at noon often leads to extreme hunger, making it difficult to eat due to the upward reversal of Heart Fire. Therefore, the most important meal is breakfast, and it is best to eat less at dinner, while late-night snacks are to be avoided; unfortunately, modern medicine goes against this principle, causing significant harm. The gastrointestinal tract has folds, often retaining decayed food, referred to as “retained food”. The foul Qi produced by retained food can harm the brain’s nerves, leading to what is commonly known as fecal poisoning, resulting in confusion and delirium. Therefore, it is essential to maintain regular bowel movements and keep the system clean. Eating small meals frequently, while the gastrointestinal tract has not been emptied, and then introducing more food, over time, will lead to problems. This advice is often given by practitioners to patients with poor digestion, suggesting small, frequent meals. Is this not digging a pit for them? When the Small Intestine Qi moves, the Bladder Qi follows, and so on. By the hour of the Rat, it is the time when Yin ends and Yang begins. This newly born Shaoyang is like a tender sprout, easily harmed, and must be well protected to grow well. Therefore, at this time, people should rest well to store Yang for the next day; conversely, people party until dawn, eat late-night snacks, and even engage in sexual activities that deplete energy. Over time, they become pale and bloodless, and it is a miracle if they do not fall ill!

The above discussion pertains to the continuity of the operation of the Twelve Meridians, while the essence of the five zang and six fu organs also has its own governing principles: The Lung governs the skin and hair, thus the essence of the Hand Taiyin Lung is distributed to the skin and hair; the essence of the Hand Yangming is scattered to the sweat glands. The Shang Han Lun states that the Taiyang governs the body’s exterior, where Qi exists without blood, known as Wei Qi, which belongs to the Foot Taiyang Bladder and stores its essence. The next inner layer is the nourishing Qi of the Hand Taiyang Small Intestine, which also stores its essence. The fourth layer is the Foot Yangming Stomach, the fifth layer is the Foot Taiyin Spleen, and the innermost is the Foot Shaoyin Kidney’s bone. Muscles store the essence of the Spleen and Stomach, while bones store the essence of the Kidney. The brain is the sea of marrow; thus, the Kidney is the earth’s water, and the brain is the sky’s water. The sky’s water should be white and clear, just like the sky, which should be clear with occasional white clouds; if dark clouds gather, a change in weather is imminent! The sky’s water and earth’s water rise and fall in accordance with the natural order; if they do not lose their sequence, there will be no disease. What could happen from extracting bone marrow? Think about it! The most common issue is aseptic meningitis. When Western medicine encounters this, they often resort to bone marrow transplants. Those who are not afraid of death can experiment with that! I still prefer to use An Gong Niu Huang Wan (Calm the Liver and Clear Heat Pill) to clear heat and reduce fire, which is safe and effective. After recovery, there are no sequelae. What do you think? When Liu Hai was injured in a car accident, and the fire evil did not subside, mainland doctors used this pill, and after the news spread, the price of An Gong Niu Huang Wan skyrocketed from 250 yuan to 1000 yuan. What happened to the conscience of the pharmaceutical industry? The pulse stores the essence of the Hand Shaoyin Heart, while the internal channel stores the essence of the Hand Jueyin Pericardium, and the external channel carries the essence of the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao. Muscles contain tendons, and bones also have large tendons, while tendons store the essence of the Foot Jueyin Liver, and the surface of the tendons carries the essence of the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder. Hair is the excess of blood; thus, after a fever, it is referred to as blood excess charcoal, which dissolves in water, immediately turning red; hence, long hair is a sign of abundant nourishing blood and vitality. Young girls are often praised as “beautiful girls,” and the reasoning lies in this. The nails are the excess of tendons; beautiful nails indicate sufficient Liver Qi, as the Liver stores blood. Poor nail color is a sign of anemia, while surface cracks indicate insufficient Liver Qi; if there are horizontal or irregular lines, or if they are severely withered, the problem could be significant. If one does not quickly nourish and care for them, many diseases will manifest. As for conditions like onychomycosis, they are caused by blood stasis. If one does not eliminate the stasis and instead uses antifungal medications, serious issues will arise. Just like the reports of Hong Kong foot medications causing deaths, it is the same; if one does not eliminate dampness but focuses on bacteria, when problems arise, who will seek justice through the media? Forget it! Do not foolishly follow the ignorant and worship Western medicine as a master. After all, it does not harm their family, and they profit while others suffer. Who dares to admit mistakes? Each one displays the traditional virtue of the Chinese people—refusing to admit wrongs. What can be done? The Twelve Meridians and the Eight Extraordinary Meridians have their specific pathways, but the essence of the five zang and six fu organs is distributed throughout the body. What connections exist within this is truly difficult to ascertain. Western medicine does not even understand what Qi is; asking them is like asking a wall. Therefore, one can only speculate based on the records of ancient experiences. For example, the Bai Liao (Eight Crevices) point is a point of the Foot Taiyang, while the Chang Qiang (Long Strong) point belongs to the Du Meridian, yet it can treat hemorrhoids of the Large Intestine Meridian. The Kong Zui (Apex of the Lung) point can also be used, and the Er Bai (Two Whites) point beside the Hand Jueyin can also be used, both located on the hand. The texts state that if a zang or fu organ is diseased, one can use the corresponding points of that meridian for treatment. For instance, although the Kong Zui point is of the Lung Meridian, the Large Intestine is its fu. The Bai Liao and Chang Qiang points are referred to as “neighboring points,” but the Er Bai point is on the hand, far from the anus. How do you explain that? There are many unsolved mysteries hidden here. The Er Bai point can only be said to be usable based on experience, as it is the result of long-term experimentation on the human body. There are many such treatment points scattered throughout the texts, and practitioners can recite them verbatim, as acupuncture or moxibustion has no drug side effects. Therefore, the ancients were happy to follow this path, hence the treatment principles of “one acupuncture, two massage, three bone-setting, four medication”. However, many clinics today not only use medications but also witness the dismantling of techniques, without benefiting from it, but rather suffering harm, as some unscrupulous practitioners believe that “if you do not use medication, how can you make money?” The ethics of medicine have fallen to such a level; what more can be said? With the advent of health insurance, patients are worse off, especially in trauma cases. If one wants to heal quickly, how can the clinic survive? Where is the profit? It is you who suffers, while they profit; where is the compassion? Oh, the way of medicine, has it fallen asleep? The organs store essence throughout the body, while the meridians run along the surface or within the body. However, the points often belong to other meridians, used to treat diseases of the zang and fu organs, such as taking the Zhang Men (Chapter Gate) point from the Spleen Meridian for the Foot Jueyin, while the Shu points are taken from the Foot Taiyang for the Spleen Shu. There are also the Six Fu He points, the Xi points, the Luo points, the Eight Hui points, and the Dai Mai, which also has intersection points with the Foot Shaoyang, etc. (see acupuncture texts for details). Ancient texts are often copied extensively, yet I do not see the connection between the fu, meridians, and the places where essence is stored, how they communicate; thus, learning acupuncture is best done by reciting the texts, but understanding it is as difficult as climbing to the sky unless one possesses extraordinary wisdom; otherwise, it is a non-starter. Just as we all know, meat contains blood vessels, but when you eat meat, do you consume blood vessels? Aside from the large tendons near the bones, do you eat tendons? The tendons and meridians are so fine that they are difficult to distinguish. X-rays cannot even clarify blood stasis, and what can be seen with contrast agents? Qi itself is vague; how can it be observed? What is the use of so-called “modern science”? The ancients regarded heaven and earth as the great universe, and humans as the small universe. The heavens have the sun and moon to determine yin and yang, while humans have Qi and blood to correspond; the heavens have wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, which correspond to the five zang of the human body: liver, heart, spleen, lung, and kidney. As for the meridians, they correspond to China’s rivers, lakes, and streams. There are twelve months in a year, and humans have twelve meridians, starting from the Shaoyang of the beginning of spring to the Jueyin at the end of the year. At winter solstice, Yang is born, and at summer solstice, Yin begins; to outsiders, this seems nonsensical, but in TCM, it is logical; the principles of treating diseases also resonate with nature. Cancer is often considered a terminal illness by the public, but TCM views it merely as Qi stagnation and blood stasis, as long as the vital energy is not defeated. The cure rate exceeds ninety-five percent; if you do not believe it, let it be your demise! The ancients had no anatomy but could correctly use the principles of heaven and earth to solve most problems. Because of this, the explanations of the relationships between the organs are absurd and unworthy of praise. The medical community has criticized the errors in many medical texts. Contemporary practitioners, however, commit the grave sin of using Western diagnostic methods to apply TCM techniques, which is a great offense. Now that anatomy has become common knowledge, why is it that diseases are not treated effectively, yet countless people are harmed? Here, I can only say that while Western anatomy cannot be denied, Western physiology is nonsense, as evidenced by the human body, with no accuracy. Why not lean towards TCM and approach this mystery from a TCM perspective? Perhaps this unsolved mystery is the key to the reincarnation of animals; the questions posed by heaven are not about genes and such nonsense. Physiology has blind spots that cannot be overcome, and treating diseases has gaps that cannot be filled. No matter how skilled a physician is, they cannot escape the calamity of death. If this is the case, it is better to hypothesize and seek verification. I ask those with a heart not to scold me; if you can solve it, I will personally visit to thank you and even take you as a teacher. But please do not wait until I return to nature to say you have solved this mystery; that will only benefit future generations. The worst thing is to apply Western physiology to TCM, explaining it in a nonsensical manner. Western medicine is not your ancestor; wrong is wrong, so why fear it? To please them, a large number of people are harmed, and the crime is deserving of death! We can only say: The nutrients absorbed by the Stomach are partly stored in the muscles for emergencies, partly circulating in the Stomach Meridian; when insufficient, they are supplied by the muscle layer; another large portion of the Stomach Qi enters the Lung through the Xu Li point, which is the great network of the Stomach. The texts also mention the great network of the Spleen, but do not mention the great networks of other organs. Why is that? If this statement is true, then what are the returning points of the various organs? The Qi that emerges from the bones must undoubtedly be Kidney Qi; does the Qi of the meridians refer to the Qi of the five zang and six fu organs or Kidney Qi? Or could it possibly have two parallel pathways? The sages do not know, and the anatomy is unclear, as in the case of the He Ding theory. Let us assume there are two pathways! If this is the case, it can be clinically verified and align with the symptoms for treatment. The use of the Jing, Ying, and Shu points also conforms to this definition. Because as each meridian Qi flows, it will also activate each layer of essence. Take hemorrhoids, for example; they belong to damp-heat diseases with Qi stagnation and blood stasis. Qi stagnation leads to swelling, and blood stasis leads to coagulation. By needling the Kong Zui point, Qi flows, and blood flows, thus it can be treated; needling the Bai Liao and Chang Qiang points can also move Qi near the anus, leading to the resolution of both Qi and blood, thus treating it. The Er Bai point is an extraordinary point outside the meridian, so it can be said that there are two meridians: one is the meridian as described in acupuncture, which carries the essence of the zang and fu organs; the other is the branch that connects to the zang and fu organs, belonging to Kidney Qi. As for how they connect? That is like the Er Bai point, which remains a mystery but is highly effective. TCM masters and PhDs should work hard here to unravel it! If the issues of these meridians can be fully understood, the common people will be blessed. However, if humans were to live forever, what would happen to the new generation? Alas! Life’s various problems can be managed at the head but not at the tail; how to resolve this depends on fate! After a few days of feasting, indulgence follows. After a long period of peace, people begin to have leisure time to fight and even provoke wars; perhaps this is the only way to solve the problem of overpopulation! Good people have it hard!

Actions such as swallowing saliva are beneficial to health, indicating a strong Stomach, as the Stomach receives the five grains to nourish the Qi of the five zang.
