This issue discusses the “fatigue” of Phlegm-Damp constitution in spring.
What is Phlegm-Damp Constitution?
Phlegm-Damp constitution refers to a type of constitution characterized by dysfunction of the internal organs, leading to disordered circulation of Qi, blood, and body fluids, resulting in the accumulation of dampness and phlegm. This type is often manifested by obesity, particularly in the abdominal area, where the abdomen feels soft like cotton when pressed. Symptoms include chest tightness, excessive phlegm, drowsiness, and a heavy sensation in the body.
Individuals with Phlegm-Damp constitution tend to prefer rich and fatty foods. Among food enthusiasts, this type is quite common. Their tongues may appear enlarged or have tooth marks, with a white, greasy, or slightly yellow coating.
Beware of Sleep Apnea Syndrome
People with this constitution often experience extreme fatigue in spring.
In fact, spring naturally makes people feel drowsy due to the warming weather, which promotes the smooth flow of meridians and the expansion of collaterals. This requires more blood to circulate throughout the body, causing even ordinary individuals to feel more fatigued than usual. For those with Phlegm-Damp constitution, who already have issues with Qi and blood circulation, the blood supply becomes even more insufficient, leading to greater fatigue.
We have all seen such individuals; during meetings, they snore loudly, causing embarrassment for their superiors. They are not doing it on purpose; they simply cannot control themselves. This is a serious issue. If this group also has Qi deficiency and weak vital energy, their throat area becomes particularly relaxed, leading to loud snoring at night, often accompanied by breathing pauses, a condition known as Sleep Apnea Syndrome.
This is a very dangerous state. Sleep Apnea Syndrome is a sleep-related breathing disorder that poses a potential risk of death. Numerous studies indicate that this condition is prone to complications such as arrhythmias, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and even heart failure, respiratory failure, and sudden death. Some scholars estimate that 3,000 people die from this condition worldwide every day.
Three Methods to Overcome “Phlegm-Damp”
What can be done for such individuals? There are only three methods.
The first is a light diet; avoid rich and fatty foods and opt for more radishes and cabbage! A friend joked that he went to see a TCM doctor for weight loss, and the old doctor gave him a plaster, saying it would work perfectly. However, he didn’t know where to apply it. When he opened it at home, it read, “Apply to the mouth.” This is not just a joke; controlling one’s diet is crucial.
The second method is to tonify Qi. You can consult a TCM practitioner for a prescription or take Qi-tonifying medicines such as Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Pill) or Xiang Sha Liu Jun Wan (Aromatic Sand Six Gentlemen Pill). Consistent use over time will yield improvements.
The third method is to get moving—exercise! In my opinion, individuals like this are already in a precarious situation, with various diseases looming. At this point, it is essential to make drastic changes in lifestyle habits and start exercising daily to turn the tide.
Let me tell you, if you can adhere to these three points, you will find that your snoring at night improves, you no longer wake up gasping, your mind is clearer during the day, and you feel less drowsy while driving. Most importantly, you will be moving further away from the dangers of death!
