Live to 100 Years Old
Many people believe that summer should focus on clearing heat and fire, and that nourishment should only occur in winter.
Director Wang Chengxiang from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine tells us, some people actually need nourishment even more in summer!
Why is it necessary to nourish in summer? How should we do it?
01
Yang Qi Protects the Exterior
Nourishing Yang Strengthens the Body
Yang Qi is like the sun in the sky; it is the driving force behind our life activities. Properly nurturing Yang Qi is essential for longevity.
Director Wang tells us that Yang Qi has a protective role, known as Wei Wai, which defends the body from external pathogens.
Summer is the time when Yang Qi is most abundant; nourishing Yang at this time can yield significant benefits. Additionally, summer is a season prone to sweating, and some people enjoy cold drinks, which can inadvertently damage Yang Qi.
For older adults, those with congenital Yang deficiency, and individuals with chronic illnesses, it is even more necessary to nourish Yang in summer. When the body’s Yang Qi is abundant, immunity is stronger!
Groups that need more nourishment in summer:
① Individuals with asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other respiratory diseases: The lungs open to the mouth and nose, making them susceptible to external pathogens. These conditions often indicate Yang deficiency.
② Individuals with chronic heart failure and other heart diseases: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that heart diseases are caused by phlegm and fluid, which can obstruct Yang Qi, making nourishment appropriate.
③ Individuals with periarthritis of the shoulder, arthritis, and other rheumatic autoimmune diseases: In TCM, this is referred to as Bi syndrome, where wind, cold, and dampness combine to harm Yang Qi.
④ Individuals with chronic gastritis, enteritis, and other digestive system diseases: Dysfunction of the spleen and stomach can lead to Yang deficiency.⑤ Individuals with rhinitis, pharyngitis, and other ear, nose, and throat diseases: Especially allergic rhinitis, which is related to wind and cold damaging Yang Qi.

Nourishing Yang in Summer
Regularly Press These Four Acupoints
Director Wang tells us that there are many acupoints for strengthening and warming Yang on the body, and regularly massaging them at home can help nourish Yang Qi in the spleen, lungs, and kidneys.
Taiyuan Point: Source Point of the Lung Meridian
Taiyuan Point is located on the wrist crease on the thumb side, where the pulse can be felt.
This point can nourish lung Qi, relieve cough, and assist in treating cough and asthma. Use your thumb to massage for 3-5 minutes until you feel a sense of soreness and swelling.
Taibai Point: Source Point of the Spleen Meridian
Taibai Point is located by pushing forward along the arch of the foot to a protruding bone called the metatarsal, just below the back of the metatarsal is a depression.
This point can strengthen the spleen and benefit Qi, assisting in treating issues related to spleen and stomach deficiency. Use a pressing and rubbing technique for 3-5 minutes until you feel soreness and swelling. Moxibustion can also be applied for a while.
Taixi Point: Source Point of the Kidney Meridian
Taixi Point is located at the highest point of the inner ankle, in the center parallel to the Achilles tendon.
This point can nourish the kidneys and has auxiliary therapeutic effects for lower back and knee soreness and urinary system diseases. Use your fingers to press for 3-5 minutes until you feel soreness and swelling.
Yongquan Point: Revitalizing Yang Qi
Located in the center of the forefoot, there is a noticeable depression when the toes are bent.
Yongquan Point is the first point of the Kidney Meridian, which can revitalize Yang Qi and nourish the kidneys. Massage Yongquan Point for 3-5 minutes before bed or while soaking your feet.

Warming and Nourishing Yang Qi
Lamb Has Wonderful Uses
In addition to using acupoints to nourish Yang Qi, individuals with Yang deficiency can also warm and nourish Yang Qi through diet.
Lamb has excellent warming and nourishing properties, which can warm and supplement kidney Yang. For those with Yang deficiency, especially kidney Yang deficiency, lamb can be consumed even in summer for nourishment.
However, for those who do not have Yang deficiency, it is not recommended to frequently eat lamb in summer, as it may lead to excessive heat, resulting in symptoms like swollen gums.
Cooking Lamb for Nourishment
Ingredients: Lamb, green onion segments, cinnamon, Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica), and a small amount of seasoning.
Method:
① Place lamb in cold water, then add green onion segments and cinnamon to stew;
② After stewing for a while, add Bai Zhi;
③ Add seasoning before serving.
• Lamb has a strong gamey flavor; adding Bai Zhi can remove the odor and enhance the aroma;
• Cinnamon can strengthen Yang and warm the stomach, improving warmth in the limbs;
• It is recommended to use the white and green parts of the green onion for stewing, as this will enhance the flavor of the lamb and improve the warming effect on kidney Yang!
In addition to lamb, individuals with Yang deficiency can also consume shrimp, yellow eel, walnuts, etc. It is advisable to eat fewer cooling foods such as mung beans, seafood, and watermelon, and avoid eating cold foods directly from the refrigerator; it is recommended to let them sit for more than half an hour before consuming.
