Shudi Huang (Rehmannia Glutinosa) has a sweet taste, a slightly warm nature, and is associated with the Liver and Kidney meridians. It is known for its ability to nourish blood, enrich yin, and replenish essence and marrow.
According to the Compendium of Materia Medica, its functions are described as: “Filling the bone marrow, promoting muscle growth, generating essence and blood, replenishing the five organs from internal injuries, promoting blood circulation, benefiting the ears and eyes, darkening hair, treating men’s five labors and seven injuries, women’s postpartum issues, menstrual irregularities, and various diseases during pregnancy and childbirth.”
Among the many ingredients that nourish kidney essence, Shudi Huang is undoubtedly the best.

Simple
Boiled Water
Daily Health Maintenance: Use 15 grams of Shudi Huang, cut into slices or cubes with a ceramic knife, place in a clay pot, add 500 milliliters of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer (maintaining a gentle boil) for 40 minutes.
The amount of Shudi Huang can be boiled twice; for the second boil, use the same amount of water as the first and simmer for about 30 minutes.
Body Regulation: Use 30 grams of Shudi Huang, cut into slices or cubes with a ceramic knife, place in a clay pot, add 700 milliliters of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer (maintaining a gentle boil) for 50 minutes.
The amount of Shudi Huang can also be boiled twice; for the second boil, use the same amount of water as the first and simmer for about 40 minutes.
Soup
Shudi Huang (Rehmannia Glutinosa) Spine Bone Soup ● ●
Ingredients: 30 grams of Shudi Huang, 9 grams of Goji Berries (Gou Qi Zi), 9 grams of Ophiopogon (Mai Dong), 9 grams of Poria (Fu Ling), 3 grams of Cinnamon (Rou Gui), several sections of pig spine.
Method: 1. Place the pig spine in cold water, add ginger slices and cooking wine, boil to remove blood scum, then rinse and set aside.
2. Soak Poria in clean water (for more than 2 hours).
3. Soak Ophiopogon for about 20 minutes.
4. Add the prepared spine, Shudi Huang, Poria, Ophiopogon, Goji Berries, and Cinnamon to a soup pot, add about 6 bowls of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer and cover for 40 minutes.
5. Finally, add salt to taste.
Pork can be replaced with duck meat as well.
Shudi Huang (Rehmannia Glutinosa) Astragalus Rib Soup ● ●
Ingredients: 500 grams of ribs, 20 grams of Shudi Huang, 10 grams of Astragalus (Huang Qi), 15 grams of Yam (Shan Yao), 2 pieces of Eucommia (Du Zhong), 5 grams of Goji Berries, 5 red dates.
Method: 1. Clean and blanch the ribs, set aside; clean the other ingredients.
2. Place the ribs in a clay pot, add Shudi Huang, Astragalus, Yam, Eucommia, and red dates.
3. Add water, bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 2 hours.
4. Add Goji Berries 10 minutes before serving, and season with salt to taste.
Shudi Huang (Rehmannia Glutinosa) Yam Soup ● ●
Ingredients: 30 grams of Shudi Huang, 30 grams of Chinese Yam (Huaishan), 9 grams of Goji Berries, 6 grams of Ophiopogon, 3 grams of Dried Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi), 3 grams of Cinnamon, 1 section of pig spine.
Method: Clean all the herbs, blanch the pig spine to remove blood scum and odor.
Then place all ingredients in a pot, add appropriate water, and simmer for one hour.
If you are vegetarian, you can omit the pig spine and use more lotus root and yam for a nourishing effect.
Shudi Huang (Rehmannia Glutinosa) Porridge
Shudi Huang Millet Porridge
Ingredients: 15 grams of Shudi Huang, 1 scoop of millet.
Method: Clean Shudi Huang and millet, place in a clay pot (do not use a metal pot), add 1500 milliliters of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer for about 45 minutes before turning off the heat.
Note: Wrap Shudi Huang in cheesecloth before boiling; millet can be replaced with japonica rice.
Infused Wine
Shudi Huang (Rehmannia Glutinosa) Wine ● ●
Use 240 grams of Shudi Huang, paired with 120 grams of Goji Berries, and optionally add 3 grams of Agarwood (Chen Xiang), 1 gram of Sandalwood (Bai Tan), or 1 gram of Cardamom (Sha Ren).
Infuse in two bottles of one-pound white liquor. Generally, it can be consumed after ten days; drink a small cup daily, which is the smallest type of wine cup, and do not drink excessively.
