TCM Specialty | Cupping Therapy: The Exclusive "Fire Extinguisher" for Baby's Health

When children suffer from persistent fever and cough, taking medication and injections can be distressing for both the child and the parents. Don’t worry, the cupping therapy from the TCM pediatrics department at Gaomi Maternal and Child Health Hospital can help babies quickly relieve symptoms.

Cupping therapy is based on the principles of TCM meridians and organ theory, developed specifically for the delicate constitution of children. It involves using silicone cups to create suction on the skin, making it a gentle and effective method with characteristics such as soft texture, quick appearance of marks, short treatment time, and minimal pain. It is a commonly used external treatment method in pediatric TCM.

As a member of the Pediatric Tuina Specialty Alliance in the Yellow River Basin, the Pediatric Tuina expert Professor Yu Juan from Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine established the first Pediatric TCM External Treatment Center and Pediatric Tuina Training Base in Gaomi City in August 2021. Adhering to a patient-centered approach, we leverage the characteristics of TCM that are “simple, convenient, effective, and affordable” to serve a wide range of children. The department currently offers various TCM treatment options including herbal decoctions, pediatric tuina, acupoint application, herbal baths, bloodletting, spine kneading, ear acupressure, cupping, and moxibustion. From the perspective of “preventing disease before it occurs,” we provide seasonal tuina, growth-promoting tuina, and digestive health tuina. Pediatric tuina focuses on hand acupoints, with unique and effective techniques that take 7-10 minutes per child, ensuring both efficacy and convenience. The outpatient volume reaches nearly 10,000 visits annually. Based on seasonal changes, we also offer TCM preventive treatments such as Sanfu and Sanjiu pastes. The acupoint application primarily treats cough, fever, runny nose, diarrhea, anorexia, and vomiting, achieving good clinical results while being well-received by children and parents due to its low skin irritation, painless nature, and confirmed efficacy.
