Winter Moxibustion for Health
Moxibustion, as a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) method for health maintenance and adjustment, has gained recognition among many for its ability to warm the meridians, promote qi (vital energy) and blood circulation, replenish yuan qi (original qi), and prevent diseases. However, many newcomers to moxibustion may not fully understand the knowledge surrounding it, leading to unsatisfactory results even after treatment. In fact, there are specific practices before, during, and after moxibustion that can significantly affect its efficacy.
So, what should one pay attention to? Let’s take a look together.
Before Moxibustion
MOXIBUSTION FOR HEALTH
1. Since moxibustion should not be performed in windy conditions, please ensure that doors and windows are closed before treatment. It is important to have proper ventilation without sealing the room completely, even in summer. Alternatively, one may choose moxibustion devices that allow smoke to escape, which is more beneficial for health, especially for those with lung discomfort.
2. Do not perform moxibustion immediately after eating; wait at least 1 hour after a meal as being overly full is not conducive to moxibustion.
During Moxibustion
MOXIBUSTION FOR HEALTH
1. Do not be overly full or hungry during moxibustion, and it is not advisable to have emotional fluctuations; maintaining a calm and relaxed mood is optimal during treatment, and avoid looking at your phone.
2. Drink warm water frequently during moxibustion to facilitate detoxification, and it is also advisable to drink warm water after treatment, with a temperature around 40°C, feeling slightly warm is sufficient. Cold water should be avoided to prevent stimulating the body, even in summer.
3. If moisture appears on the skin during moxibustion, it indicates the expulsion of dampness from the body, suggesting that the treatment is effective.
After Moxibustion
MOXIBUSTION FOR HEALTH
1. Do not wash your hands or face with cold water within half an hour after moxibustion. After treatment, the pores of the skin are open, making one susceptible to cold; in the cold winters of the north, it is advisable to stay in a warm room for a while before going out, which is more beneficial for health.
2. Do not take a shower immediately after moxibustion. It is best to shower before treatment or wait at least 2 hours after moxibustion before bathing.
3. If you feel fatigued after moxibustion, it is a normal phenomenon. The body is undergoing a period of adjustment, and it is advisable to rest without overexerting oneself, while also replenishing fluids.

Frequency and Stages
Moxibustion for Health

Moxibustion Sequence

02
Some people do not follow a specific sequence for moxibustion; while this may not cause significant issues in the short term, it can lead to problems with long-term practice.
Moxibustion Sequence: Start with the back, then the chest and abdomen; begin with the upper body before moving to the lower body, and start with the head before treating the limbs. This is commonly referred to as the sequence of yang before yin.
Should Moxibustion be Hot?
Moxibustion for Health
03
As a method of thermal stimulation, moxibustion should reach a certain level of warmth. The “moxibustion sensation” is not merely about the skin feeling hot or reddened, but encompasses a variety of sensations. Generally, this includes penetrating heat (heat penetrating from the surface to the internal organs), expanding heat (heat spreading from the moxibustion point to the surrounding area), and conducting heat (heat traveling along the meridians), as well as sensations of soreness, swelling, pressure, heaviness, pain, numbness, or coldness in the area treated or distant from it.
Moxibustion for health should not be excessively hot; it is recommended to use gentle moxibustion, aiming for skin reddening and tolerable warmth. Especially for the elderly, whose nerve conduction may be impaired and tactile sensation diminished, it is crucial not to pursue high temperatures excessively to prevent burns. In fact, as long as the acupoints are accurately located and long-term treatment is maintained, it can still be effective.
Post-moxibustion care mantra: After moxibustion, avoid wind and cold, be cautious with emotions, and avoid overly rich or cold foods; a light vegetarian diet is most suitable.
