Honeysuckle, first recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing, is the dried flower buds or early flowers of the Lonicera japonica plant, also known as Shuanghua, Jinhua, or Yinhua. Tao Hongjing stated: “It grows on vines and does not wither in winter, hence the name Honeysuckle.” Li Shizhen noted: “It blooms in March and April, about an inch long, with two flowers on one stem, one large and one small, resembling a half side, with long stamens. When the flower first opens, both the stamens and petals are white, but after two or three days, they turn yellow, with new and old flowers contrasting, hence the name Honeysuckle.”Pharmacological Effects and Clinical Benefits of Honeysuckle
Honeysuckle is sweet and cold in nature, entering the Lung (Fei) meridian, Stomach (Wei) meridian, and Heart (Xin) meridian. Its functions include clearing heat and detoxifying, dispersing wind-heat, and it is indicated for external wind-heat, initial onset of warm diseases with fever, sore throat, carbuncles, and blood dysentery. Clinically, it is commonly used to treat influenza, tonsillitis, respiratory infections, traumatic infections, acute mastitis, lobar pneumonia, bacterial diseases, furuncles, abscesses, erysipelas, and uterine erosion.
Modern research has proven that the effective medicinal components of Honeysuckle mainly include flavonoids, volatile oils, triterpenoid saponins, organic acids (with chlorogenic acid being the most abundant), and trace elements, which have strong inhibitory effects on bacteria such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Pneumococcus, Bordetella pertussis, and Meningococcus. In 2003, Honeysuckle was also used in traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions for the prevention and treatment of SARS, gaining widespread popularity.
