19: Urinary Difficulties Due to Kidney Yang Deficiency
Symptoms and Signs
Core Symptoms: Frequent urination at night, weakness in the lower back and knees.
Detailed Explanation:
Frequent urination, especially at night, without pain, often worsened by cold weather or fatigue.
Treatment Methods:
Chinese Patent Medicines:
Gui Fu Di Huang Wan (Cinnamon and Atractylodes Pill), Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder)
Yang Deficiency = Qi Deficiency + Cold.
Qi is the driving force behind the functioning of the organs.
If there is Qi deficiency, the driving force for organ function is insufficient, leading to inadequate blood supply to the organs and tissues, resulting in a condition of insufficient blood supply due to Qi deficiency. At this time, cold invades the body, further weakening Qi’s ability to resist, causing blood stagnation and impairing organ function, which is termed Yang Deficiency.
When the organ tissues suffer from Yang deficiency, metabolism cannot function normally, leading to two pathological products: one is stasis caused by unregulated Qi and blood flow, and the other is phlegm fluid caused by obstructed fluid circulation.
Once these pathological products are generated, they further obstruct the circulation of Qi and blood, as well as fluid metabolism, leading to a vicious cycle.
So, what symptoms will appear at this moment?
Generally speaking, there are issues related to cold, such as pain and cold sensations, issues related to dampness, such as heaviness, and issues related to stasis, such as lingering discomfort. When applied to specific organs, it will produce related functional combinations.
Patients with urinary difficulties due to Kidney Yang deficiency experience frequent urination in cold conditions, obstruction, and need to get up at night to urinate, with lower back pain that improves with warmth.
Some may ask, if it is Yang deficiency, can’t we just warm it up with hot things? For example, can sitting by a fire solve the Yang deficiency? Some people choose fire therapy, sweating, or sauna, which depletes body fluids and is of no help.
So, is moxibustion effective? This is a technical skill that is based on the differentiation of organs and meridians, applying moxibustion to acupoints, which can be effective.
However, if it is purely cold or a mild case of cold, it can be effective. If Yang deficiency has persisted for a long time, leading to severe stasis and phlegm, moxibustion alone may not suffice and can easily turn stasis into dry blood and phlegm into greater obstruction.

In mild cases, we can use Chinese patent medicines to address the issue.
In cases of significant internal cold, where the hands feel cold and the condition has persisted for a long time, with back pain and weakness in the legs, we can use Gui Fu Di Huang Wan.
In cases of significant exterior cold, for example, when the weather gets cold, urination frequency increases, and it occurs suddenly, we can use Wu Ling San Pian to address this.
Specifically, if there is excessive urination, such as frequent night urination, some may wake up 4-5 times at night, and this occurs with cold or fatigue.
Additionally, young girls, especially boys under six years old, may experience frequent urination in winter, with only a little urine each time but needing to go to the bathroom constantly. In this case, Gui Fu Di Huang Wan, Wu Ling San can also be used.
Today’s sharing ends here. Next time, we will discuss: Urinary Difficulties Due to Water Dampness Obstruction
