Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong) is an irregular, nodule-shaped, fist-sized mass, with a diameter of 2 to 175px. The surface is yellow-brown, rough, and shriveled, featuring numerous parallel raised nodes. The apex has a depressed, round-shaped stem scar, while the underside and nodes have many small, tumor-like root scars. It is firm and not easily broken, with a cross-section that is yellow-white or gray-yellow, scattered with yellow-brown oil chambers, and the growth rings appear wavy. It has a strong aromatic scent, with a bitter and spicy taste, slightly numbing the tongue, and a mild sweetness aftertaste. Chuanxiong is primarily used to treat wind-cold headaches and dizziness, difficult labor, postpartum stasis abdominal pain, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain, stabbing pain in the chest and hypochondrium, swelling and pain, and rheumatic pain.
