After the cold weather sets in, it becomes a peak period for cardiovascular diseases. Are you experiencing a blood stasis constitution? How can we resolve blood stasis? Today, I will teach you some methods to assess your blood stasis constitution.
The first self-assessment method is to check the dorsalis pedis pulse.
The pulse on the dorsum of the foot can reflect the health status of the blood vessels to a certain extent. The dorsalis pedis artery is easy to locate, situated between the big toe and the second toe, about two to three finger widths above the point of Tai Chong (Liver 3). When checking the dorsalis pedis pulse, we should not just feel for the speed but seriously perceive the strength of the pulse on both sides. If the pulse on both feet becomes weaker, it may indicate vascular blockage.
The second self-assessment method is to observe the sublingual veins. If the veins are relatively thick, prominently raised, dark in color, and have branches spreading outwards, this usually indicates that there is blood stasis in your body.
So, how do we resolve blood stasis once it occurs?
First, we need to understand how blood stasis forms. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), there are several common causes for blood stasis, such as Qi stagnation leading to blood stasis and cold congealing leading to blood stasis. Today, I will teach you how to improve blood stasis constitution through differential diagnosis.
First, if you often feel pent-up anger, have a bad temper, and frequently experience chest and rib distension, along with wandering pains in the body, and if you have lumps or nodules along the liver meridian pathway, such as uterine fibroids in women, thyroid nodules on the neck, or dark spots on the face, these are all along the liver meridian. If you stick out your tongue and see that the sides are swollen with stasis points, this is commonly due to Qi stagnation and blood stasis. What should you do? I will introduce a TCM formula called Xuefu Zhuyu Capsules (Blood Mansion Invigorating Capsules). What does it do? It promotes blood circulation and resolves stasis, regulates Qi, and alleviates pain. It contains ingredients that invigorate Qi and resolve stasis, making it suitable for blood stasis caused by Qi stagnation.
Next, if you are particularly sensitive to cold, and sometimes feel sharp pain when the wind blows, with the painful areas feeling cool to the touch, and you find relief with heat application, this group of people often has joint issues, such as knee arthritis, shoulder periarthritis, cervical spondylosis, etc. If you stick out your tongue and see that the tongue body is pale and swollen with stasis points, and the coating is white, this is commonly due to cold congealing leading to blood stasis. What should you do? I will introduce a TCM formula called Yaotongning (Lower Back Pain Relief). What does it do? It disperses cold evil, warms the meridians, and opens the collaterals, which is exactly what we need.
Next, if you have a relatively overweight body type, often feel chest tightness and discomfort, have a sensation of phlegm in the throat, and frequently experience dizziness and heaviness in the head, and some people may develop lipomas under the skin or breast hyperplasia in women, if you stick out your tongue and see that the tongue body is enlarged, dark purple, with stasis spots and a thick white greasy coating, this is commonly due to phlegm-damp obstructing the collaterals, leading to blood stasis. What should you do? I will introduce a TCM formula called Xiaojindan (Small Golden Pill). What does it do? It resolves phlegm, disperses nodules, invigorates blood, and softens hardness. It contains ingredients that resolve phlegm and invigorate blood, making it suitable for blood stasis caused by phlegm-damp.
Lastly, if you experience fixed pain that does not move, and the pain worsens after exertion, often feel fatigued and weak, have shortness of breath and low energy, and sometimes develop bruises easily, if you stick out your tongue and see that the tongue body is very pale with stasis spots, this is commonly due to Qi deficiency leading to blood stasis, as Qi deficiency fails to propel blood circulation, resulting in stasis. What should you do? I will introduce a TCM formula called Zhitong Huayu Pian (Pain Relief and Blood Invigorating Tablets). What does it do? It tonifies Qi, invigorates blood, and disperses stasis to alleviate pain. It contains ingredients that tonify Qi and resolve stasis, making it suitable for blood stasis caused by Qi deficiency.
These are the four common causes of blood stasis. Have you learned them?
