To achieve longevity and avoid illness, it all depends on balancing Yin and Yang. Hello everyone, I am Dr. Jia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we believe that Yin and Yang are fundamental to a person’s health. If one can maintain a state of abundant and balanced Yin and Yang, diseases will find it difficult to approach, and health and longevity will not be a problem. Today, I will share with you two herbs that can harmonize Yin and Yang, allowing you to enjoy health and longevity.
There is a saying in TCM: “When Yin and Yang are balanced, there are no diseases; when Yin is stable, Yang will not be ill.” This emphasizes the importance of Yin and Yang. However, many people today have poor lifestyle habits, such as staying up late, frequently ordering takeout, or experiencing high levels of stress, which can disrupt the balance of Yin and Yang in our bodies. As a result, many people today are in a sub-healthy state.
For example, we see many individuals with Yin deficiency or Yang deficiency. When Yang is deficient, it is like a heating system that has malfunctioned, leading to cold intolerance, cold hands and feet, frequent nighttime urination, and excessive sweating. When Yin is deficient, it is like a decrease in moisture in nature, resulting in frequent thirst, dry skin, hot palms and soles, and feelings of chest tightness and irritability.
In TCM, we say that “lonely Yin does not give birth, and solitary Yang does not grow,” which means that both Yin and Yang depend on each other’s existence. If one side has a problem and is not adjusted, it will lead to issues on the other side. For example, if Yang deficiency is not addressed, over time it will harm Yin, leading the body to also be in a state of Yin deficiency, making it difficult to adjust later.
So how do we balance Yin and Yang? TCM teaches that the kidneys are the foundation of congenital essence, and kidney Qi transforms Yin and Yang, which is then transmitted to the five organs and six bowels. Therefore, the fundamental way to adjust Yin and Yang is to regulate the kidneys. Additionally, since the liver and kidneys share a common source, adjusting the liver will enhance the effect. However, TCM also states that the spleen and stomach are the foundation of acquired essence, and the spleen and stomach have the function of transformation and transportation. If we only supplement the kidneys, the body may not absorb it, making supplementation ineffective. Thus, today I recommend two herbs that can tonify the liver and kidneys while also benefiting the spleen—one nourishes Yin, and the other tonifies Yang.
The first herb is **Tu Si Zi** (Cuscuta Seed), which has the functions of tonifying the kidneys and securing essence, benefiting the liver and improving vision, and tonifying the spleen and stopping diarrhea. What is remarkable about this herb is that it is warm but not drying, tonifying but not stagnating, thus primarily tonifying Yang while also benefiting Yin. It can nourish the liver, tonify the kidneys, and stop diarrhea.
The second herb is **Nu Zhen Zi** (Ligustrum Fruit), which is a classic herb for nourishing the liver and kidneys. The *Ben Cao Gang Mu* (Compendium of Materia Medica) states: “Nu Zhen Zi nourishes Yin, benefits the kidneys, tonifies Qi, and soothes the liver,” indicating its effects of soothing the liver, benefiting the kidneys, and nourishing Yin.
Having discussed this, do you understand how to balance Yin and Yang? Finally, I will give you a simple test to see if you can distinguish between Yin deficiency and Yang deficiency. If you have hot palms and soles, is it Yin deficiency or Yang deficiency?
