People say that children can see unclean things before the age of five.
Actually, even now, I still don’t know if what I saw was real, or if what the old man who read my fortune said was true.
When I was a child, I lived in a self-built house, and that area was filled with people from all over.
Our landlord was chubby; he was a truck driver and could only be seen a few days a month.
He liked to drink, and when he drank too much, he would often cause trouble and curse at people.
One night, we had all gone to sleep.
The landlord’s shouting echoed in the hallway, waking us up.
Since it was a self-built house, the sound insulation was poor, and the space was small; there was no master bedroom or guest room, just a bed in the living room.
My parents slept on the bed, and I slept on the sofa.
With the noise outside, we could all hear it.
I saw my dad put on his clothes and go out.
He was used to it because he often went out to stop the landlord when he drank too much.
After a while, the landlord’s noise grew louder, and my mom, worried, followed him out.
As a child, I had never seen such commotion, and I felt a bit scared.
At that time, the house was dark, and I listened to the noise while looking out the window.
I kept staring at the clock on the wall, and slowly, I saw something I would never forget in my life.
A figure came out of the clock!
That’s right, she came out of the clock.
The figure was a woman; I saw long hair and a white robe-like garment, but I couldn’t see her face clearly.
I don’t know if it was a coincidence, but her appearance coincided with the landlord’s noise stopping.
The woman gradually approached me, and I was so scared that I cried out, “Get away!”
My parents heard me and rushed down.
When they burst in, the figure was still there.
But they seemed to see nothing, asking me what was wrong while turning on the light.
When the light came on, the figure disappeared.
I told my parents that I saw a figure come out of the clock.
They clearly didn’t believe me but still comforted me.
My dad went out again to check on the landlord, while my mom tried to get me to sleep.
Years passed, and I never encountered that again.
One day, my mom suddenly took me to have my fortune told.
It was an old man wearing glasses, who chatted with my mom for a while while looking at me.
He asked me to stretch out my hand, and he looked at my palm for a long time.
He said I had three calamities ahead, all major ones.
The old man said these three calamities couldn’t be avoided or transformed; I could only accept them peacefully.
Then he pointed at me and said that this calamity was one I willingly accepted.
I was young at the time and didn’t understand what calamity meant.
The old man continued to speak in a low voice to my mom, both of them looking at me as they talked.
When it was over, I saw my mom’s expression wasn’t good, and she was frowning every day.
In fact, I didn’t really believe it; what major illness could I have that I would willingly accept three calamities?
The reality was that I did encounter two serious crises, but I was fine.
Months later, I often experienced sleep paralysis, and that woman appeared again.
However, she didn’t seem to scare me; I felt she was helping me.
Because as soon as she appeared, my sleep paralysis would immediately disappear.
One morning, my mom suddenly said she wanted to take me to have my fortune told again.
However, when we went, we didn’t see the old man.
There were a few other fortune tellers around, and my mom asked them, and they said the old man had passed away, quite suddenly, within about six months.
When I first met that old man, he was quite healthy and spoke with a strong voice.
During that time, my mom suddenly took me to several Taoist temples, but we only went to the temples, not the Buddhist monasteries.
Even if the monastery was nearby, she didn’t take me inside.
As for what the fortune teller told my mom, I had asked several times, but each time my mom said nothing and told me not to ask again.
Now, my parents have long passed away.
Such things are also inconvenient to tell friends; they are all timid and afraid of being scared.
Occasionally, I think of these things and feel strange and puzzled.
Why did the fortune teller say I willingly accept three calamities, and what is the third calamity? I am already thirty, and it hasn’t come yet.
When I experienced sleep paralysis, why did she appear, even after moving houses?
Why have I not experienced sleep paralysis after growing up?
I had a period when my health was very poor, yet I didn’t experience sleep paralysis.

My constitution is very resilient, in other words, I am a relatively lucky person.
In the autumn of 2003, I had just started my third year of junior high.
Due to the heavy academic pressure, I hadn’t visited my grandmother for a long time.
Coincidentally, one Friday, I told my mom that I wanted to go to my grandmother’s house that night.
Because I missed my grandmother, I stayed overnight at her house.
The next day when I returned home, I found my mom’s face was not good, and my dad was lying in bed.
I thought they had quarreled.
After asking, I learned that the previous night, because I wasn’t home, they had simply cooked two dishes, and my dad opened a bottle of beer for dinner.
After dinner, my dad went to lie down, and my mom went to wash the dishes.
Before my mom finished washing, she heard my dad calling her.
When she went in, my dad had his eyes closed, and tears were streaming down his face.
He kept mumbling, “I’m leaving; it will just be you and our daughter from now on. You both must live well.”
At first, my mom thought my dad was joking and tapped him a few times, calling him to get up.
But my dad didn’t move at all.
After several attempts, my mom became a bit anxious and didn’t know what to do.
Suddenly, she remembered that the neighbor had a woman who was a fortune teller (commonly known as a shaman).
She quickly found the older sister.
At that time, the older sister was eating, and when she heard this, she dropped her chopsticks and followed my mom home.
The older sister came in, looked around, took a broom, and started tapping my dad up and down, asking him, “What do you want?”
My dad said, “I want a ‘yao ji’ (mahjong).”
The older sister quickly asked my mom if they had any mahjong at home.
My mom found a set of mahjong from the storage cabinet.
The older sister continued to tap my dad, asking him what he wanted.
My dad said, “I want ‘ba wan’ (eight thousand).”
After confirming several times, the older sister took out a piece of ‘ba wan’ and placed it in my dad’s hand.
Immediately, my dad’s eyes opened, looking confused, with no memory of what had just happened.
Later, my mom learned from chatting with the neighbor that before dinner that day, my dad had gone to a nearby mahjong parlor to play mahjong.
A few days earlier, an old man had died at that mahjong parlor from excitement after winning a game.
That game, he had won ‘ba wan’!
Now, when I bring this up, my dad still doesn’t believe it happened, thinking my mom was just trying to scare him.
My mom was afraid to tell me at the time, not wanting to frighten me.
Later, my mom realized that I was particularly averse to such matters.
Whenever something inexplicable happened at home, I was never there.
That’s why she dared to tell me this story.
