Huoma Ren

Huoma Ren, the name of a traditional Chinese medicine, refers to the dried mature seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant from the Moraceae family. It is distributed in Northeast, North, East, and Central South China. It has the effect of moistening the intestines and relieving constipation. It is commonly used for blood deficiency and fluid deficiency, as well as dry intestines and constipation.

Introduction to Huoma Ren

Herb Name: Huoma Ren

Pinyin: Huǒ Má Rén

Alias: Dama Ren, Huoma, Xianmazi

Source: This product is the dried mature fruit of the Cannabis sativa plant. It is harvested in autumn when the fruit is ripe, impurities are removed, and it is sun-dried.

Characteristics: This product is oval-shaped, measuring 4-5.5 mm in length and 2.5-4 mm in diameter. The surface is gray-green or gray-yellow, with fine white or brown net-like patterns. It has edges on both sides, a slightly pointed top, and a circular stem scar at the base. The fruit skin is thin and brittle, easily broken. The seed coat is green, with two cotyledons that are milky white and rich in oil. It has a faint odor and a bland taste.

Chemical Components: The seeds contain trigonelline, isoleucine betaine, hemp seed globulin, linoleic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid.

Properties: Sweet, neutral.

Meridians Entered: Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, protect from heat and pests.

Effects of Huoma Ren

Moistens dryness, lubricates the intestines, promotes urination, invigorates blood. Treats dry intestines and constipation, thirst, heat strangury, wind bi, dysentery, irregular menstruation, scabies, and ringworm.

Usage of Huoma Ren

Internal use: 9-15 g. — “Chinese Pharmacopoeia”

Internal use: Decoction, 3-6 qian; or in pills or powders. — “Dictionary of Chinese Medicine”

External use: Pound and apply or extract oil for application. — “Dictionary of Chinese Medicine”

Internal use: Decoction, 10-15; or in pills or powders. — “Compendium of Materia Medica”

External use: Appropriate amount, pound and apply; or decoct for washing. — “Compendium of Materia Medica”

Huoma Ren Formulas

Note: The following formulas should be used under the guidance of a physician.

1. For treating cold damage with floating and rough pulse, floating indicates strong stomach qi, rough indicates frequent urination, floating and rough interact, leading to hard stools, with the spleen being constrained.

Mix 2 sheng of Huoma Ren, 0.5 jin of Bai Shao (White Peony), 0.5 jin of Zhi Shi (Bitter Orange, roasted), 1 jin of Da Huang (Rhubarb, peeled), 1 chi of Hou Po (Magnolia Bark, roasted, peeled), and 1 sheng of Xing Ren (Apricot Kernel, peeled, roasted, and prepared separately). Combine the six ingredients, mix with honey, and form into pills the size of a wutong seed. Take ten pills, three times a day, gradually increasing as needed. (“Shang Han Lun” Ma Zi Ren Wan)

2. For treating constipation

Pound Huoma Ren, mix with rice to make porridge. (“Zhou Hou Fang”)

3. For treating deficiency heat in the lower jiao, bone and joint pain, muscle spasms, difficulty urinating, infrequent and scanty stools, dry mouth and shortness of breath

Use 5 he of Huoma Ren, pound, add 2 sheng of water, boil down to half, and take. (“Wai Tai”)

4. For treating postpartum stagnation with excessive sweating and constipation

Mix equal parts of Zi Su Zi (Perilla Seed) and Huoma Ren, wash thoroughly, pound finely, use water to further pound, extract one cup of juice, and cook in two portions of porridge. This porridge can be consumed not only postpartum but is also beneficial for the elderly and those with deficiency and constipation. (“Ben Shi Fang” Ma Zi Su Zi Zhou)

5. For treating excessive thirst, eating several dou daily, and red and painful urination

Use 1 sheng of Huoma Ren, 3 sheng of water, boil for three to four boils, and drink the juice. (“Zhou Hou Fang”)

6. For treating five types of strangury, scanty and painful urination

Use 1 sheng of Dong Ma Zi (Winter Hemp Seed), pound, filter to extract 2 sheng of juice, mix with 3 he of rice, cook into porridge, and add scallions, pepper, and cook thoroughly, take on an empty stomach. (“Shi Yi Xin Jing”)

7. For treating edema and thirst

Roast Huoma Ren until fragrant, pound with water to extract 1 da sheng, separately boil 3 da sheng of red beans to extract 1 sheng of juice, combine with Huoma juice, and boil for three to five boils, drink as needed, hot or cold, and eating beans is also good when hungry. (“Wai Tai”)

8. For treating wind edema with abdominal distension, heavy pain in the navel and waist, and inability to move

Use 0.5 sheng of Dong Ma Zi, crush, pound with water to extract juice, mix with 2 he of rice, cook into thin porridge, and add scallions, pepper, ginger, and fermented soybeans, take on an empty stomach. (“Shi Yi Xin Jing”)

9. For treating pain from wind toxin in the bone marrow, unable to move

Soak 1 da sheng of Huoma Ren in water until it sinks, drain, dry, roast until fragrant, then pound finely like white powder, divide into ten doses. For each dose, take a large porcelain bowl of warm wine, mix with Huoma powder, filter to remove the residue, combine the wine, and boil down to half, take on an empty stomach, one dose per day. (“Qie Zhong Fang” Da Ma Ren Jiu)

10. For treating white dysentery

Use Huoma juice, boil with mung beans, and consume on an empty stomach. (Meng Shen “Bi Xiao Fang”)
