With the improvement of living standards, people’s awareness of health care has become increasingly strong. The autumn and winter seasons are also the times when many people choose to nourish their bodies, so the term “nourish” has been frequently mentioned recently.
When it comes to “nourishing,” there is always an unavoidable topic, which is “deficiency,” such as kidney deficiency, spleen deficiency, etc. Especially kidney deficiency, many male friends feel that they have kidney deficiency whenever they experience lower back pain, resulting in indiscriminate supplementation that may not be effective.
What is “Kidney Deficiency”?
Kidney deficiency refers to insufficient essence, qi, yin, and yang of the kidneys.
All organs have their own qi, blood, yin, and yang; the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys can all be deficient, but people pay more attention to “kidney deficiency” in men.
The kidneys are paired, located in the lower back, and are interrelated with the bladder. The kidneys are responsible for storing essence and governing reproduction, serving as the foundation of congenital vitality; they govern water and the intake of qi. They are associated with bones, govern the production of marrow, manifest in hair, open to the ears and the two lower orifices, are present in saliva, and are associated with fear, corresponding to the winter season. The kidneys store yuan yin and yuan yang, which are the roots of human growth and development, and the basis for the functional activities of the organs. If there is insufficient constitution or prolonged illness leading to physical deficiency, any consumption will result in illness in all organs, with kidney disease often presenting as deficiency syndromes.
What are the symptoms of “Kidney Deficiency”?
The symptoms of Kidney Yang Deficiency are characterized by “cold”: The main symptoms include lower back pain, cold limbs, aversion to cold, and even edema. Poor sexual function can also lead to Kidney Yang Deficiency;
The symptoms of Kidney Yin Deficiency are characterized by “heat”: The main symptoms include lower back pain, dryness and heat, night sweats, spontaneous sweating, dizziness, and tinnitus.
How to alleviate the symptoms of “Kidney Deficiency” in daily life?
Pay attention to diet
In daily life, one can consume black foods that have the effect of nourishing the kidneys. For example: black rice, black beans, black sesame, black fungus, etc.
Warm Reminder
When nourishing the kidneys, it is important to use the right remedies. If symptoms such as lower back and knee soreness, lack of energy, cold limbs, and frequent urination indicative of Kidney Yang Deficiency occur, one can try taking Gui Fu Di Huang Wan (桂附地黄丸).
Gui Fu Di Huang Wan originates from the book “Jin Kui Yao Lue” written by Zhang Zhongjing in the Han Dynasty. It consists of eight ingredients: prepared Aconite (制附子), cooked Rehmannia (熟地黄), Cornelian Cherry (山茱萸), Alisma (泽泻), Cinnamon (肉桂), Moutan Root (丹皮), Chinese Yam (山药), and Poria (茯苓). Among them, cooked Rehmannia nourishes the kidneys and fills essence, Cornelian Cherry nourishes yin and astringes essence, and Chinese Yam tonifies the spleen and secures essence. The combination of these three herbs can nourish Kidney Yin, tonify liver blood, and benefit spleen yin while astringing essence to stop leakage. Alisma can drain Kidney fire and prevent the cloying effect of cooked Rehmannia; Moutan Root can clear liver fire and restrain the warming and drying nature of Cornelian Cherry; Poria can drain dampness from the spleen, assisting the tonifying effect of Chinese Yam.
Health Reminder from Zhongjing:
To maintain health, one must first nurture the heart. If the mind is scattered, medication often yields poor results; however, if the mindset is calm and positive, taking medicine often yields better results.
