The stomach is a very “delicate” organ, yet many people’s gastrointestinal systems are constantly overloaded.
Overeating, a preference for cold and raw foods, smoking, excessive drinking, irregular meal times, and negative emotions can gradually weaken the spleen and stomach, leading to Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency. The main symptoms include cold limbs, abdominal distension and pain, and persistent stomach pain, which over time can affect quality of life.
What happens with Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency? The spleen and stomach are the “source of Qi and blood production”; it is evident that life depends fundamentally on the spleen and stomach. TCM believes that if a person’s spleen and stomach are not functioning well, there will be insufficient production of Qi and blood, leading to inadequate nourishment of various body parts, which naturally results in numerous diseases. Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency can impair the digestive function of the spleen and stomach, preventing the conversion of nutrients into essence for the body, which over time can lead to malnutrition or physical weakness. If there is already Yang deficiency in the spleen and stomach, combined with liver Qi stagnation, it will exacerbate the Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency, creating a vicious cycle. The TCM principle for treating Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency is to warm the center, dispel cold, and relieve pain, while also ensuring body warmth and avoiding cold exposure to the abdomen, especially at night when sleeping, to keep the lower abdomen warm.
For spleen and stomach issues, TCM believes that “30% relies on treatment, 70% relies on nourishment.” Here are several simple and effective methods to nourish the spleen and stomach: 1. Maintain regular meal times. Ensure meals are taken at regular intervals and in appropriate portions, eating only 70-80% full at each meal. Avoid overeating and do not skip breakfast. Ensure a diverse diet with a good balance of meat and vegetables; finish dinner at least 3 hours before bedtime, keeping it light, such as choosing yam porridge or coix seed porridge. 2. Avoid spicy, stimulating, and cold foods. While spicy and cold foods may provide temporary satisfaction, they can harm the spleen and stomach, gradually weakening them. Therefore, it is essential to resist temptation and choose warming and light foods. 3. Moxibustion. After igniting the moxa stick, place it in a moxibustion box, focusing on warming the Zhongwan (中脘), Shangwan (上脘), and Xiawan (下脘) points, as well as the Shenque (神阙) point, which can help strengthen the spleen and benefit the stomach, alleviating Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency.
4. Abdominal massage. First, sit or stand upright, inhale while straightening the chest, slightly leaning back for 2-3 seconds, then exhale while contracting the chest and bending forward. Use both hands to apply pressure to the abdomen, repeating 20-30 times. This method can provide beneficial stimulation to the gastrointestinal tract, enhancing the digestive function of the spleen and stomach. Additionally, you can place your hands over the navel and massage in clockwise and counterclockwise directions for 100-200 times each. 5. Horse stance. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, about twice the shoulder width, with hands resting on the knees and slightly squatting, but not beyond the toes, keeping the upper body straight. Hold this position for about 1-2 minutes. Practicing the horse stance can strengthen the lower body muscles and promote gastrointestinal motility. Those with Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency can also choose gentle aerobic exercises such as cycling, walking, practicing Tai Chi, yoga, or brisk walking, but avoid vigorous exercise, as excessive sweating can deplete Qi and injure fluids, worsening Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency.
