01 Composition of Gui Zhi Fu Ling WanGui Zhi Fu Ling Wan is an excellent formula, consisting of the following herbs: Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Fu Ling (Poria), Tao Ren (Peach Kernel), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Root), and Shao Yao (Peony Root).Gui Zhi, Tao Ren, Shao Yao, and Mu Dan Pi are all herbs that activate blood circulation and resolve stasis, while Fu Ling promotes urination and drains excess water from the body, maintaining a pathway for excretion through urine. This combination of Gui Zhi and Fu Ling serves to activate blood circulation and clear stasis, particularly effective for blood stasis in the reproductive system. Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan has the function of activating blood circulation and promoting diuresis, which is primarily achieved through urination rather than bowel movements, a key characteristic of this formula, emphasizing the importance of excretion.Excretion is always linked to a system of elimination, and this formula focuses on the elimination of harmful blood from the body. 02 Effects and Functions of Gui Zhi Fu Ling WanI frequently use Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan. What conditions does this formula treat?Firstly, it is used for gynecological issues, specifically cysts and fibroids of the female reproductive organs.It is important to distinguish whether a woman has missed her period due to pregnancy or because of a space-occupying lesion. This distinction must be clear.If the pulse is normal, without any pathological characteristics, and menstruation has not occurred for three months, one should check for pregnancy. If pregnant, the absence of menstruation is normal.If not pregnant, one should examine the pulse for characteristics such as wiry, thin, or weak pulses. A weak pulse is characterized by a deep, fine, and weak quality, indicating potential issues such as a space-occupying lesion.Additionally, one should consider the patient’s bowel habits; if there is habitual constipation, this may indicate an obstruction in the excretion system.This stagnation can lead to further complications, allowing us to determine the presence of a space-occupying lesion.Whether it is a cyst, fibroid, or polyp, Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan can be used.Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan can be adjusted in dosage; it can be increased to three or five times the standard amount.

If we do not use the pills, we can also use decoctions; it is not necessary to use pills exclusively. Modern herbal extracts can also be combined with honey to form pills, which dissolve slowly, providing a prolonged effect, albeit at a slower pace.This formula can be increased in dosage significantly; I personally believe that taking seven or eight pills at once may yield some effect, which is my personal method of using Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan.Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan can also treat other conditions, not just the ones mentioned, such as dysmenorrhea, premenstrual abdominal and lower back pain, or headaches. Additionally, it can be used for leukorrhea and vaginitis.This is a characteristic of traditional Chinese medicine. The “Shang Han Za Bing Lun” does not explicitly mention this, but it does not prohibit its use; I have found it effective on multiple occasions.Furthermore, for women experiencing lower abdominal bleeding, dysmenorrhea, or premenstrual pain, Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan can be used; it is also effective for edema before and after menstruation and for lower limb edema.This article is based on a lecture by the renowned physician Guo Shengbai.
