Introduction:This article refers specifically to osteophyte formation of the lumbar intervertebral discs, which falls under the category of low back pain in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM has a long history of various external treatment methods for low back pain, primarily acupuncture and moxibustion, but also including external applications of Chinese herbs. The external application formula introduced in this article contains many medicinal ingredients, including several toxic substances; the author emphasizes that it must not be taken internally, and everyone should take note.
Effective External Application of Chinese Medicine for Osteophyte Formation
After the publication of the article “External Application of Chinese Medicine for Osteophyte Formation” by Comrade Lu Min in the third issue of this journal in 1976, many readers and patients wrote in to report clinical validation of its effectiveness. Here are some excerpts:
1. Cao Bozhan from Wuhan
I suffered from lumbar osteophyte formation in 1958, often feeling dull pain in my lower back, occasionally experiencing unbearable pain, and had sought treatment from many doctors without success, leading to a very pessimistic mood.
Later, I was pleased to read about the effective formula in “New Chinese Medicine” and prepared the herbs as instructed, slightly modifying the method: I placed the powdered herbs into a gauze bag, stitched it securely, soaked it in white liquor, and applied it to the painful area of my lower back. I also used a high-temperature water bottle filled with boiling water placed on top of the bag for hot compresses, performing this 1-2 times daily for about 2 hours each time, with slight sweating being ideal during the hot compress.
After one week, the pain completely disappeared, and I was able to move freely; it has been seven years without recurrence. I later treated another patient with low back pain using the same method, and he recovered in half a month.
2. Wang Jiezhong from the TCM Department of Yidu County Hospital, Hubei Province
I once treated a male patient who had suffered from low back pain for many years and had difficulty walking. X-ray examination showed significant osteophyte changes at the anterior and posterior edges of lumbar vertebrae L3-L5. Treatment with both Western and TCM methods, as well as physiotherapy, was ineffective.
Thus, I decided to try the formula by Lu, but the patient was skeptical and only applied it a few times without noticeable effect. To strengthen his resolve, I copied the formula from “New Chinese Medicine” for him to read, which deeply moved him. He then followed the method and applied it twenty times, and his pain remarkably disappeared, allowing him to walk normally. I followed up five years later, and he had not experienced a recurrence.
Subsequently, this patient referred several others who came to request the formula, and they all showed improvement after following the external application method.
