In daily life, plasters are one of the most common items in family medicine cabinets. However, there are different forms of plasters, which are generally divided into patches and plaster patches. Although both are used externally on the skin, there are certain differences between the two.

What is a Patch?

A patch refers to a thin, flexible preparation made from raw medicinal substances combined with suitable materials, designed to be applied to the skin, capable of producing systemic or local effects.

Patches can be applied to intact skin surfaces or to skin surfaces that are diseased or incomplete. For example, a motion sickness patch, which is a transdermal patch that delivers medication through the skin into the bloodstream for systemic effects, is known as a transdermal patch, such as the fentanyl transdermal patch.

What is a Plaster Patch?

A plaster patch refers to a preparation made by combining raw medicinal substances with suitable matrices to form a paste, which is then coated onto backing materials for application to the skin, capable of producing systemic or local effects.

Plaster patches include gel patches (originally known as plaster or gel patches, such as fever-reducing patches) and rubber patches (originally known as rubber patches, such as bone pain patches, and pain-relieving patches).
