What happened?↓↓↓Due to shoulder pain from overtime work,Miss Gao receivedacupuncture and cupping therapyat Weikang Traditional Chinese Medicine in Dongguan earlier this month.Since it was her first experience,she found it novel and recorded it, but the noveltydidn’t last long before the pain overwhelmed her.
Miss Gao: I initially refused, but he said it was effective, so I tried it. My back hurt a lot, but the doctor said it was normal,so I trusted him.
After enduring the pain during cupping,Miss Gao prepared to drive home, but the pain in her backintensified.She called Dr. Liu, who performed the cupping, and was told,“Just drink some glucose, and you’ll be fine.”However, after buying two boxes of glucose and mixing it with water,there was no relief,and the pain persisted.Ultimately, she chose to go to the hospital.
The doctor’s diagnosis wasleft-sided pneumothoraxhypokalemia
Due to difficulty breathing,the day after cupping, Miss Gao was hospitalizedfor five days and is currently still resting.
Miss Gao: When I was discharged, the doctor told me I needed a follow-up CT scan in a month and to rest during this month.
Miss Gao believesthe cause of her pneumothorax is related to the cupping therapy.Journalists found thatthere was a similar case in Wuhan,where a person also developedpneumothorax after cupping.
At that time, Dr. Hao, the deputy director of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department at Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, explained,“When cupping, the pressure inside and outside the chest cavity changes,which may lead to the rupture of pulmonary bullaeand potentially cause pneumothorax.Patients with lung diseasesshould avoid cupping therapy.”Additionally,pregnant women or women during menstruationand those with poor coagulation functionare also not suitable for cupping.
Journalists contacted Dr. Liu, who performed cupping on Miss Gao,and he stated that after many years of practice,this was the first time he encountered such a situation.
Miss Gao statedthat she had clearly refused cupping therapy,but Dr. Liu claimed she agreed to continue.Before starting cupping,Dr. Liu did not inquire about Miss Gao’s health status,but he stated that Miss Gao“did not refuse.”▼
This afternoon (16th),journalists contacted staff from the Health Bureau of the Dongcheng Street Officeand accompanied Miss Gao to Weikang Traditional Chinese Medicine,where they met Mr. Li, the person in charge.
