Chapter 24 of the Huangdi Neijing: The Manifestation of Blood and Qi

【Original Text】

The constants of the human body are as follows: the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel generally has more blood and less Qi, the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel generally has less blood and more Qi, the Yangming (Bright Yang) channel generally has more Qi and more blood, the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) channel generally has less blood and more Qi, the Jueyin (Absolute Yin) channel generally has more blood and less Qi, and the Taiyin (Greater Yin) channel generally has more Qi and less blood. This is the constant of heaven. The foot Taiyang and Shaoyin are interior-exterior pairs, the Shaoyang and Jueyin are interior-exterior pairs, and the Yangming and Taiyin are interior-exterior pairs, which represent the foot Yin and Yang. The hand Taiyang and Shaoyin are interior-exterior pairs, the Shaoyang and the heart master are interior-exterior pairs, and the Yangming and Taiyin are interior-exterior pairs, which represent the hand Yin and Yang. Now that we know the suffering of the hand and foot Yin and Yang, when treating diseases, one must first remove the blood from the affected channel, then address the suffering, observe what is desired, and then drain the excess and tonify the deficiency.

To locate the back Shu points, first measure the distance between the two nipples, fold it in half, and then use another stick to measure half of that distance. This will create a triangle with the two ends supporting each other. Then, use this to measure the back, ensuring one angle is at the top, aligned with the spine’s Dazhui (Great Vertebra) point, while the other two angles are at the bottom. The lower angle corresponds to the Lung Shu point. The next angle down corresponds to the Heart Shu point. The next angle down corresponds to the Liver Shu point on the left and the Spleen Shu point on the right. The next angle down corresponds to the Kidney Shu point. This is the method for locating the five organ Shu points for needling and moxibustion.

The amount of Qi and blood in the human body has a certain constant. For example, the Taiyang channel generally has more blood and less Qi, the Shaoyang channel generally has less blood and more Qi, the Yangming channel generally has more Qi and more blood, the Shaoyin channel generally has less blood and more Qi, the Jueyin channel generally has more blood and less Qi, and the Taiyin channel generally has more Qi and less blood. This is the constant of congenital endowment.

The foot Taiyang Bladder channel and the foot Shaoyin Kidney channel are interior-exterior pairs, the foot Shaoyang Gallbladder channel and the foot Jueyin Liver channel are interior-exterior pairs, and the foot Yangming Stomach channel and the foot Taiyin Spleen channel are interior-exterior pairs. This represents the relationship between the three Yang channels and the three Yin channels of the foot. The hand Taiyang Small Intestine channel and the hand Taiyin Heart channel are interior-exterior pairs, the hand Shaoyang Sanjiao (Triple Burner) channel and the hand Jueyin Pericardium channel are interior-exterior pairs, and the hand Yangming Large Intestine channel and the hand Taiyin Lung channel are interior-exterior pairs. This represents the relationship between the three Yang channels and the three Yin channels of the hand. Now that we know that diseases occur in the channel of the hand or foot Yin and Yang, the treatment method for those channels with abundant blood and Qi must first involve needling to draw out the blood to alleviate the suffering; then, observe what is desired based on the condition’s deficiency or excess, and subsequently drain the excess pathogenic factors and tonify the deficiencies.

To determine the location of the five organ Shu points on the back, first use a stick to measure the distance between the two nipples, then fold it in half. Use another stick of the same length, cut in half, to support the first stick’s ends, forming a triangle. Then measure the patient’s back, ensuring one angle is facing up, aligned with the Dazhui point on the spine, while the other two angles are at the bottom. The positions indicated by the lower left and right angles correspond to the Lung Shu points. Moving the upper angle down one degree, the positions of the lower left and right angles correspond to the Heart Shu points. Moving down another degree, the left angle corresponds to the Liver Shu point, and the right angle corresponds to the Spleen Shu point. Moving down another degree, the left and right angles correspond to the Kidney Shu points. This is the method for locating the five organ Shu points for needling and moxibustion.

When the body is comfortable but the emotions are troubled, the disease often arises from the meridians, and it is appropriate to treat it with moxibustion and acupuncture. When the body is fatigued and the emotions are troubled, the disease often arises from the throat, and it is appropriate to treat it with sweet herbs. When the body is weak and often experiences fear, with blocked meridians, the disease often manifests as numbness in the limbs, and it is appropriate to treat it with massage and medicinal wine. This describes the five types of diseases related to the state of the body and emotions and their corresponding treatments.

When needling the Yangming channel, it can cause bleeding and Qi to leak; when needling the Taiyang channel, it can cause bleeding but should not injure the Qi; when needling the Shaoyang channel, it can cause Qi to leak but should not injure the blood vessels; when needling the Taiyin channel, it can also cause Qi to leak but should not injure the blood vessels; when needling the Shaoyin channel, it can similarly cause Qi to leak but should not injure the blood vessels; when needling the Jueyin channel, it can cause bleeding but should not injure the Qi.
