A Single Herb Cured My 30-Year Chronic Rhinitis

I have a long-standing issue where my nose is always runny, regardless of the season, requiring frequent blowing, especially in winter. I always have tissues in my pockets, which is both inconvenient and unhygienic. After visiting the hospital, I was diagnosed with chronic rhinitis. Despite various treatments, there was no improvement. I thought it didn’t interfere with my work or eating, so I gave up on treatment, suffering for 30 years without a solution.

One day, I came across a folk remedy for rhinitis in a book: grind Gē Bù Shí Cǎo (Euphorbia hirta) into powder, mix it with petroleum jelly, apply it to gauze, and insert it into the nostrils for an hour and a half, or use the powder as a sniffing agent. To verify the effectiveness of Gē Bù Shí Cǎo for treating rhinitis, I consulted the “Dictionary of Chinese Medicine” and found clinical reports on its use for rhinitis, stating: “Treatment of rhinitis, including acute rhinitis, chronic simple rhinitis, hypertrophic rhinitis, and allergic rhinitis, showed that most cases experienced relief or disappearance of symptoms such as headaches and nasal congestion after treatment.

The specific method is: grind Gē Bù Shí Cǎo into fine powder and inhale through the nostrils several times a day, or soak cotton in the mixture, wring it out, wrap a small amount of the powder, roll it into a thin strip, and insert it into the nose for 30 minutes before removal, once or twice daily. After using the cotton strips twice daily, surprisingly, I was cured in less than a month.

Appendix: Origin of the Name

Why does this herb have such a strange name? Legend has it that a long time ago, a farmer’s child suffered from rhinitis, with persistent nasal congestion and yellow pus discharge, making him unpleasant to play with for other children.

Fortunately, the child had a flock of geese to keep him company. One day, he took the geese to graze near a mountain. The hungry geese ate everything except for a fresh and tender grass that they refused to touch. Curious, the child used a bamboo stick to guide the geese to the grass, but they only sniffed and ran away.

Intrigued, the child pulled up a plant and sniffed it, suddenly sneezing several times, and his nose was no longer congested. He began to sniff this plant daily, and gradually, he stopped having the foul discharge. Other children in the village with rhinitis also used this grass and were quickly cured.

From then on, the medicinal properties of this grass became widely known. Because the geese would not eat it, it was named “Gē Bù Shí Cǎo” (Euphorbia hirta), and it remains a commonly used herb today.
