“The spleen is the source of the transformation and transportation of Qi and blood, and is the foundation of postnatal life.” The spleen plays a crucial role in our health. Nowadays, many people suffer from spleen deficiency and wish to tonify the spleen, but there are various types of spleen deficiency. How should one use medicine for this?
1. Spleen Qi Deficiency. Individuals with pure spleen Qi deficiency may experience mental fatigue, general weakness, lack of motivation, and become easily exhausted with minimal activity. They often have a pale yellow complexion, speak softly, lack appetite, have a sweet or tasteless mouth, a swollen tongue, thin white coating, and tooth marks on the sides. For this, one can refer to Si Jun Zi Wan (Four Gentlemen Decoction).
2. Spleen Yang Deficiency. Symptoms include sensitivity to cold, heaviness and weakness in the limbs, cold hands and feet, easy sweating, chest tightness, laziness, low energy, a swollen tongue with tooth marks, pale color, and a slippery, greasy tongue coating. For this, one can refer to Li Zhong Wan (Regulating the Middle Pill).
3. Spleen Yin Deficiency. Also known as insufficient spleen Yin, this condition refers to a lack of spleen Yin fluids. Symptoms include general weakness, lack of appetite, frequent abdominal bloating, internal heat, dry mouth and thirst, frequent belching, nausea, dry stools, red eyelids, prone to cheilitis, a red tongue, and a thin tongue coating that easily flakes off. For this, one can refer to Zi Sheng Wan (Nourishing Life Pill).
4. Spleen Deficiency Leading to Dampness. Symptoms include uncontrolled drooling during sleep, a feeling of heaviness in the head, dizziness, oily hair, poor appetite, easy eczema, and soft, unformed stools that are difficult to flush away. The tongue is swollen with tooth marks. For this, one can refer to Shen Ling Bai Zhu Wan (Ginseng and Atractylodes Pill).
5. Spleen Deficiency Leading to Phlegm. Symptoms include dizziness, chest tightness, frequent coughing with phlegm, white phlegm that is easy to expel, a sticky mouth, bad breath, facial swelling in the morning, a large abdomen, and general fatigue. The tongue is swollen with a white greasy coating. For this, one can refer to Er Chen Wan (Two Cured Pill).
6. Spleen Deficiency with Cold Dampness. This is often caused by prolonged spleen Yang deficiency. Symptoms include abdominal bloating and pain, poor appetite, a sticky mouth, frequent belching, nausea, dizziness, sensitivity to cold, cold limbs, easy edema, increased vaginal discharge in women, and a swollen tongue with a white slippery or greasy coating. For this, one can refer to Fu Zi Li Zhong Wan (Aconite Regulating the Middle Pill).
7. Liver Qi Stagnation Affecting the Spleen. This type of spleen deficiency is caused by liver Qi stagnation. Symptoms include irritability, emotional distress, tendency to anger, dry mouth and bitter taste, frequent chest and hypochondriac pain, abdominal bloating and pain, tendency to belch and sigh, insomnia, and a red tongue with cracks. For this, one can refer to Xiao Yao Wan (Free and Easy Wanderer Pill).
