Conceptual Clarification of Disease Syndromes in ‘Jin Kui Yao Lue: Treatment of Water Qi Diseases’

[Abstract]
‘Water Qi Diseases’ is a challenging chapter in ‘Jin Kui Yao Lue’. Although it is titled ‘Water Qi Diseases’, it actually discusses the treatment of various diseases including water qi disease, yellow sweat disease, and qi division disease, leading later generations to often regard all these diseases as water qi diseases, making it difficult to correctly understand the diagnostic and treatment concepts of this chapter. This article identifies water qi as a pathogenic factor and water qi disease as a disease name, analyzing the relationship between the two. It proposes that the cognitive prototype of water qi is the accumulation of liquid water and gaseous water caused by abnormal water circulation in nature, demonstrating how Zhang Zhongjing understood the main symptoms, pathogenesis, and treatment principles of water qi diseases through the generation, accumulation, and dissipation of gaseous water. Furthermore, based on textual literature and the treatment of symptoms, it exemplifies that water qi disease, yellow sweat disease, and qi division disease are three independent diseases. It clarifies the relationship between qi division disease, blood division disease, and water division disease in terms of naming, pathogenesis, and syndrome differentiation, pointing out that Zhang Zhongjing’s discussion in ‘Water Qi Diseases’ revolves around the syndrome differentiation of the three ‘water diseases’. Clarifying the concepts and relationships of various disease syndromes in ‘Water Qi Diseases’ helps to systematically and deeply elucidate Zhang Zhongjing’s principles and thoughts on diagnosing and treating water qi diseases.
