In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the term “Jue Zheng” (厥证) refers to a sudden episode of fainting, where the person is unaware of their surroundings, often accompanied by coldness in the limbs. This is classified as an acute condition. In mild cases, the person may regain consciousness shortly, while in severe cases, they may remain unconscious, leading to a poor prognosis. The causes of Jue Zheng primarily include emotional distress, physical weakness, loss of blood and fluids, and irregular diet. Jue Zheng is commonly associated with Qi, Blood, and Phlegm stagnation, and is considered a critical condition that requires immediate treatment. Today, let us explore the specific symptoms and causes of Jue Zheng.Understanding the Different Manifestations and Causes of Cold and Heat Syndromes in the Huangdi Neijing

Causes of Cold and Heat Syndromes

Deficiency of Yang Qi leads to Cold Jue; deficiency of Yin Qi leads to Heat Jue. In Heat Jue, the sensation of heat generally starts from the soles of the feet, where the Yang Qi circulates along the outer sides of the toes, converging at the soles and gathering at the center of the foot. Thus, if the Yin Qi is deficient and the Yang Qi is excessive, it can lead to a sensation of heat in the soles. In Cold Jue, the cold sensation typically starts from the toes and ascends to the knees, where the Yin Qi originates from the inner sides of the toes, converging below the knees and then rising to the knee area. Therefore, if the Yang Qi is deficient and the Yin Qi is excessive, it can lead to a cold sensation from the toes to the knees. This cold sensation is not due to external cold invasion but is caused by internal Yang deficiency.Understanding the Different Manifestations and Causes of Cold and Heat Syndromes in the Huangdi Neijing

Formation Causes of Cold Jue

The lower Yin is a convergence point for many meridians, including the Foot Taiyin (足太阴) and Foot Yangming (足阳明) meridians. Generally, during spring and summer, Yang Qi is abundant while Yin Qi is less, whereas in autumn and winter, Yin Qi is predominant and Yang Qi is diminished. Some individuals, believing themselves to be robust, indulge excessively and overwork during the autumn and winter when Yang Qi is weak, leading to depletion of Kidney essence. This deficiency of essence in the lower body cannot quickly restore the Qi of the upper body, resulting in continuous leakage of essence downwards, causing a deficiency of Yuan Yang (元阳) and internal cold. The evil Yin cold then rises against the Qi of the upper body, resulting in Cold Jue. Evil Qi stagnating in the Middle Jiao (中焦) leads to deficiency of Stomach Qi, which cannot transform food and fluids into essence to nourish the meridians, resulting in further depletion of Yang Qi and dominance of internal Yin cold, causing coldness in the hands and feet.Understanding the Different Manifestations and Causes of Cold and Heat Syndromes in the Huangdi Neijing

Formation Causes of Heat Jue

Alcohol enters the stomach and, due to its aggressive nature, travels through the skin’s meridians, causing the blood in the meridians to become abundant while the channels appear empty. The Spleen is responsible for transporting the fluids and nutrients from the stomach. If one drinks excessively, the Spleen cannot transport, leading to deficiency of Yin Qi; when Yin fluids are deficient, the aggressive heat from alcohol invades the interior, causing disharmony in Stomach Qi; when Stomach Qi is disharmonious, the essence becomes depleted; and when the essence is depleted, it cannot nourish the limbs. Such individuals are likely to frequently become intoxicated or overindulge after eating, causing the heat from food and alcohol to stagnate in the Spleen, leading to internal heat, which can manifest as red urine. The aggressive nature of alcohol damages the Kidney essence, leading to increasing deficiency, with Yin deficiency and Yang excess, resulting in a situation where Yang Qi is overly dominant internally, causing heat in the hands and feet.Understanding the Different Manifestations and Causes of Cold and Heat Syndromes in the Huangdi Neijing

Causes of Different Symptoms in Jue Zheng

When the Qi in the lower body is abundant while the upper body is deficient, the lower body becomes empty, leading to abdominal distension due to undigested food; if Yang Qi is excessive in the upper body while the lower Qi is also concentrated upwards, it causes a disruption in Qi flow, leading to confusion and loss of consciousness.

Treatment Methods for Jue Zheng Acupuncture Points

The treatment principle for Jue Zheng is: for excess conditions, use draining methods; for deficiency conditions, use tonifying methods. The treatment should focus on the primary meridian affected, not influenced by other meridians. For the Foot Taiyin Meridian, if the Qi is reversed, leading to calf spasms and heart pain radiating to the abdomen, the main acupuncture points of the affected meridian should be used for treatment. If all three Yin meridians of the foot are reversed, leading to rigidity and falls, vomiting blood, and easy nosebleeds, the main acupuncture points of the affected meridian should be used for treatment. For the Foot Shaoyang Meridian, if the Qi is reversed, leading to joint immobility and inability to move the waist and neck, if accompanied by intestinal abscess, it becomes an incurable critical condition; if there is shock, it may lead to death. For the Foot Yangming Meridian, if the Qi is reversed, leading to shortness of breath, coughing, fever, easy fright, nosebleeds, and vomiting blood.Understanding the Different Manifestations and Causes of Cold and Heat Syndromes in the Huangdi Neijing For the Hand Taiyin Meridian, if the Qi is reversed, leading to fullness in the chest and coughing, often accompanied by vomiting of phlegm, the main acupuncture points of the affected meridian should be used for treatment. For the Hand Jueyin and Hand Shaoyin Meridians, if the Qi is reversed, leading to heart pain radiating to the throat and fever, it is an incurable condition. For the Hand Taiyang Meridian, if the Qi is reversed, leading to deafness and tearing, inability to turn the neck, and inability to bend forward or backward, the main acupuncture points of the affected meridian should be used for treatment. For the Hand Yangming and Hand Shaoyang Meridians, if the Qi is reversed, leading to throat obstruction, swelling and pain in the throat, and stiffness in the neck, the main acupuncture points of the affected meridian should be used for treatment.Understanding the Different Manifestations and Causes of Cold and Heat Syndromes in the Huangdi Neijing BiyuejuYour Health and Wellness AdvisorUnderstanding the Different Manifestations and Causes of Cold and Heat Syndromes in the Huangdi NeijingScan the QR code | Follow usSearch WeChat: Biyueju Health Management
