Winter Illness Treated in Summer – Du Jiu
On July 29, Ms. Li, a local resident, arrived punctually at the Preventive Health Department of Xinyi City Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. This marks her third consecutive year of receiving Du Jiu, making her a true “loyal supporter”.
In the past, cold hands and feet were a persistent issue for her. Regardless of the biting cold of winter or the sweltering heat of summer, the bone-chilling cold always made her feel embarrassed and uneasy when shaking hands with others. To improve this condition, she learned that Du Jiu could activate the body’s Yang energy and regulate the immune system, so she entered the Traditional Chinese Medicine hospital’s Preventive Health Department with a glimmer of hope.
Upon witnessing others having their backs covered with thick ginger and mugwort for Du Jiu, Ms. Li felt a mix of curiosity and anticipation. During her first experience, her back initially felt a warm caress, and then this warmth seemed to have a life of its own, slowly penetrating deep into her skin, spreading throughout her body, bringing an unprecedented sense of relaxation and comfort. At that moment, she felt she had found a long-lost warmth and peace.
Since then, Ms. Li has formed an inseparable bond with Du Jiu. Every summer during the dog days, she arrives punctually for this traditional therapy. In the blink of an eye, this is her third year of persistence. Speaking of the changes brought by Du Jiu, Ms. Li beams with happiness, saying, “The magic of Traditional Chinese Medicine is truly hard to express. Over the past two years, my constitution has significantly improved; my hands and feet are no longer as cold as before, and my resistance has also strengthened, making it rare for me to catch a cold even once or twice a year.” This transformation from within has filled Ms. Li with awe and gratitude for Chinese medicine culture.

Du Jiu | Winter Illness Treated in Summer
What is Du Jiu?
Du Jiu, as a traditional external treatment method in TCM, is performed by applying moxibustion on the Du meridian, combining the effects of meridians, acupoints, herbs, and moxibustion to achieve the effects of warming Yang and dispelling cold, benefiting the kidneys and opening the Du, strengthening bones and muscles, breaking blood stasis and dispersing masses, relieving pain, and balancing Yin and Yang. The Du meridian, known as the “sea of Yang meridians,” governs the Yang energy of the entire body. Through Du Jiu, it can maximally stimulate and invigorate the body’s own Yang energy, enhance organ function, and improve immune response.
The Best Time for Du Jiu – Dog Days
The hot summer dog days are the best season for Du Jiu. At this time, the body’s Yang energy is at its peak, the pores are relaxed, and the meridians are unobstructed. The combination of external Yang energy and the warm air of nature can more effectively help the body expel accumulated cold, strengthen the true essence, dispel pathogens, and promote health. This is especially effective for those suffering from cold-deficiency diseases, where Du Jiu can yield remarkable results.
Indications for Du Jiu
Du Jiu therapy is widely applicable for the regulation of various diseases and sub-health conditions, mainly including:
Internal Diseases: Gastrointestinal dysfunction, chronic gastritis, chronic diarrhea, chronic bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, insomnia, fatigue syndrome, etc.
External Diseases: Chronic bone diseases, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar disc herniation, osteoarthritis, senile osteoporosis, cervical spondylosis, muscle strain, etc.
Gynecological Diseases: Pre-pregnancy constitution regulation, primary dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea; postpartum pain, postpartum recovery; cold in the uterus, irregular menstruation, etc.
Sub-health Regulation: Regulation of Yang deficiency constitution, Qi deficiency constitution, phlegm-damp constitution, blood stasis constitution, cold limbs, body weakness with colds, easy fatigue, low immunity, etc.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers.
Individuals with severe heart and lung dysfunction.
Diabetic patients with unstable blood sugar control.
Patients with bleeding disorders.
Individuals with heat intolerance or severe local skin lesions.

Precautions for Du Jiu
Preparation before treatment: Ensure adequate sleep the night before, and avoid moxibustion when overly full, hungry, or extremely fatigued.
During treatment: Maintain a stable body position and avoid unnecessary movements. If you feel significant skin burning, promptly inform the nurse.
Post-treatment care:
Drink plenty of warm water and avoid cold drafts.
Do not bathe for 6 hours after treatment, and if you do, use warm water.
Maintain a light diet, avoiding spicy, pungent, and cold foods.
If blisters appear on the skin after treatment, seek medical attention promptly.
Daily routine: During treatment, maintain a reasonable schedule, keep a regular lifestyle, and pay attention to emotional regulation.
Course of Du Jiu
The course of Du Jiu is usually determined based on the patient’s condition, age, and constitution. Generally, it is recommended to have one session per week, with four sessions constituting a course of treatment.
After completing a course, a two-week break is suggested before starting the next course. This ensures treatment effectiveness while avoiding discomfort from over-treatment.
Du Jiu, as one of the traditional therapies in TCM, has gained increasing attention and favor due to its unique efficacy and wide application range. Performing Du Jiu during the dog days not only alleviates and treats various cold-deficiency diseases but also serves to prevent illness and enhance physical constitution. However, when undergoing Du Jiu treatment, it is essential to follow medical advice and heed contraindications and precautions to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.
