Question from a netizen:
Teacher Feng Mingyu, after arriving home for the winter, the past few days have been cold without central heating, the air conditioning is not warm, my limbs are icy, my hands and feet are cold, and my joints are painful again. Is there a way to dispel the cold and warm my body?
To address the coldness in the body that leads to pain, we need to understand three causes:
First: Insufficient Yang Qi.
Health is based on the balance of Yin and Yang. Yang refers to Yang Qi, while Yin refers to Yin fluids, which encompass all bodily fluids.
Patients with insufficient Yang Qi can eat more warming foods, such as beef, lamb, ginger, and jujube tea.
Those who often stay up late or have chronic illnesses will deplete a significant amount of Yang Qi, making them prone to body cold.
Second: Stagnation of Yang Qi.
In cases of Yang Qi stagnation, the quantity of Yang Qi is actually sufficient.
However, the transportation of Yang Qi to various parts of the body is obstructed, preventing it from dispersing, which necessitates warming and unblocking the meridians. For example, rubbing the sides of the ribs is a good option.
Third: Blood deficiency and cold.
Blood deficiency means insufficient blood in the body.
Blood nourishes the body; for instance, skin nourished by blood will have elasticity and luster, while hair will be dark and thick.
Additionally, blood has a warming effect on the body. Since “the heart governs blood,” blood pumped from the heart flows throughout the body, bringing both nourishment and warmth.
Cold areas such as hands, feet, and joints are often far from the heart, leading to insufficient nourishment from the heart’s blood supply, resulting in coldness.
For body cold and joint pain, I recommend four acupoints: Zhongwan (中脘), Guanyuan (关元), Zusanli (足三里), and Taichong (太冲).

Nourishing Qi and Blood
■. “The spleen and stomach are the foundation of postnatal life, the source of Qi and blood production,” a strong spleen and stomach can transform food into Qi and blood to nourish the entire body.
Zhongwan (中脘) is the Hui point of the Fu organs, where the essence of the six Fu organs converges.
Any condition related to the six Fu organs can be treated with Zhongwan. For example, diseases of the stomach, gallbladder, large intestine, small intestine, bladder, and Sanjiao can all benefit from Zhongwan.
Zhongwan is also the Mu point of the stomach, making it particularly effective for treating stomach diseases.
Once, a friend had some beer at home and then experienced diarrhea and stomach pain, feeling severe spasms in the upper abdomen.
I recommended three acupoints: Zhongwan, Zusanli, and Liangqiu (梁丘). After about twenty minutes, the pain alleviated and disappeared.
The depth of the Zhongwan acupoint corresponds to the “stomach.”
Location: 4 cun above the navel.
■.Zusanli (足三里), similar in function to Zhongwan, is the He point of the stomach channel and one of the primary acupoints for treating stomach diseases.
Combining Zhongwan and Zusanli can enhance the efficiency and conversion rate of the spleen and stomach in processing food, thus generating Qi and blood.
Last year, a patient with diarrhea and severe cold intolerance had taken many tonics for Qi and blood and Yang Qi, but with no effect.
The reason was poor digestion in the spleen and stomach, preventing the full transformation and absorption of the medicine. After pausing the medication, I focused on moxibustion at Zhongwan and Zusanli. After a month, the spleen and stomach function improved, and when the patient resumed medication, the effects were very noticeable.
Therefore, for patients with chronic illnesses and poor spleen and stomach function, these two acupoints can be used as daily health maintenance points.
Location: 3 cun below the outer knee joint, in the depression lateral to the patellar tendon.
2
Unblocking the Meridians
■. After ensuring sufficient Qi and blood, the next step is to consider whether the meridians are unobstructed.
Guanyuan (关元) is a key acupoint for patients with body cold and should be moxibusted for 40-60 minutes or more.
Guanyuan is the intersection of the Ren channel, liver channel, kidney channel, and spleen channel, and “the liver stores blood,” “the spleen governs blood and generates blood,” and “the kidney stores essence, which can be transformed into blood.”
It is evident that the liver, spleen, and kidneys are all closely related to blood. Moxibustion at Guanyuan can simultaneously unblock three major meridians related to Qi and blood, both nourishing blood and unblocking the channels, allowing blood to fill the body and dispel cold pathogens.
Location: 3 cun below the navel.
■.Taichong (太冲), as the Yuan point of the liver channel, has a “regulating Qi” effect.
Once, a patient said: When I get angry, I feel dizzy, and when I check my blood pressure, it spikes. What should I do?
I replied: Pressing Taichong can regulate Qi and extinguish liver fire. Taichong can both tonify and drain; heavy pressing can clear liver fire and regulate Qi, preventing anger from causing blood pressure to rise.
Light pressing + moxibustion can tonify liver blood, enhancing the liver’s function of storing blood.
When Qi is smooth, blood follows the Qi through the meridians to nourish the body, allowing hands, feet, joints, and lower abdomen to receive sufficient Qi and blood nourishment, making them less susceptible to cold and pain.
Location: On the dorsum of the foot, in the depression between the first and second toes.
