Fuling (Poria) in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Ancient scholars believed that Fuling (Poria) is a spiritual entity transformed from the essence of pine trees, possessing the characteristic of concealment, hence the name “Fuling” (伏灵). The Shennong Bencao Jing lists Fuling as a superior herb: it has a sweet and neutral flavor, growing in the valleys of Mount Tai under large pines. Long-term consumption calms the soul, nourishes the spirit, suppresses hunger, and prolongs life.

【性味与归经】Sweet, bland, neutral. Enters the Heart, Lung, Spleen, and Kidney meridians.

【作用与功效】Promotes urination and leaches out dampness, strengthens the Spleen and Stomach, calms the heart and nourishes the spirit. Commonly used to regulate symptoms of anxiety, palpitations, depression, insomnia, and vivid dreams. Fuling is rich in polysaccharides and lecithin, essential substances that directly participate in the body’s anti-aging processes. Fuling is white in color, belongs to the Metal element, and enters the Lung meridian, which nourishes the skin through the Qi mechanism of the Lung meridian.

【禁忌】When taking Fuling, avoid strong tea, coffee, and overly spicy foods that may affect its efficacy; due to its downward-moving properties, pregnant women should use it cautiously.
