In daily life, many friends may exhibit symptoms such as pale complexion, lack of taste, excessive sweating, fatigue, pale tongue coating, and even introverted personality. In fact, these are due to a constitution of Yang Deficiency (yang xu).
How does Yang Deficiency constitution develop?
Some individuals have Yang Deficiency due to congenital reasons, while others develop it due to acquired factors.
1. Improper Diet
Many people love cold drinks, especially enjoying ice cream and cold beverages in summer. These cold foods, when ingested, directly lower the stomach’s temperature, leading to an excess of Yin energy in the body, which in turn harms Yang energy. Similarly, consuming watermelon and cold drinks in winter can also deplete Yang energy, resulting in Yang Deficiency.
2. Irregular Lifestyle
In today’s information-rich environment, everyone is connected to the internet, scrolling through their phones, playing games, and binge-watching TV shows, often staying active until the early hours. In fact, staying up late not only harms Yin but also damages Yang. Nighttime is when Yang energy accumulates in our bodies; only by going to bed on time can Yang energy rise normally. If rest is inadequate, Yang energy cannot rise, naturally leading to Yang Deficiency. Additionally, spending long periods in cold environments can also contribute to Yang Deficiency.
3. Misuse of Antibiotics
Many people experience gastrointestinal discomfort after taking antibiotics for a few days, such as stomach pain, bloating, loss of appetite, or diarrhea. Generally, antibiotics can irritate the gastrointestinal tract. From a TCM perspective, antibiotics damage the body’s Yang energy. Since antibiotics have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, they are inherently bitter and cold in nature, which primarily harms the spleen and stomach. The spleen and stomach are the foundation of postnatal vitality; once their functions are impaired, the body’s vitality diminishes, leading to reduced Yang energy and resulting in Yang Deficiency.
What should individuals with Yang Deficiency eat?
Since Yang Deficiency is present, one should consume more warming foods. The kidneys are the root of Yang energy in the body, and the spleen is the source of Yang energy transformation, so it is essential to tonify both the spleen and kidneys. Foods such as lamb, crucian carp, and nuts can help strengthen the spleen and boost energy.
Dietary Restrictions for Yang Deficiency Constitution
One should avoid or even eliminate cold foods, as they not only harm Yang energy but also exacerbate Yang Deficiency, such as ice cream, cold drinks, mung beans, kelp, and pears.
Considerations for Yang Deficiency Constitution!
1. Avoid Cold
Individuals with Yang Deficiency have a poor ability to adapt to temperature changes; they feel cold even with slight drops in temperature.
Currently, whether in the north or south, we are in the transitional season of summer to autumn, but remnants of summer heat still linger. Those with Yang Deficiency should avoid sleeping outdoors, refrain from direct airflow from fans, and minimize air conditioning use unless necessary. When sleeping, special attention should be paid to keeping the navel warm; a light blanket can be used to cover the navel area to prevent cold exposure, which can worsen Yang Deficiency symptoms.
2. Avoid Staying Up Late
Adequate sleep is crucial for Yang energy. Staying up late not only harms Yang energy but also leads to fatigue and a dull complexion. It is recommended to sleep before 11 PM.
3. Exercise More
“Movement generates Yang”; individuals with Yang Deficiency should engage in more physical activity than others. Exercise can also enhance the body’s immunity and reduce the likelihood of illness. However, it is advisable for those with Yang Deficiency to engage in dynamic exercises, such as walking or cycling, while ensuring to maintain a moderate level of exertion, achieving a state of “slight sweating” is optimal; although excessive sweating is not suitable for those with Yang Deficiency, static exercises like yoga are more appropriate for those with Yin Deficiency.
Yang Deficiency is not something that can be corrected in a day or two; it requires consistent dietary supplementation and adjustments to daily habits and routines to see results.
