The general dosage is 6-15 grams, decocted for oral use, and can also be made into pills or powders. Those with spleen and stomach deficiency-cold and qi deficiency should not use it. Our ancient people discovered that honeysuckle can detoxify bacteria. In the Song Dynasty, Zhang Bangji recorded a story in “Mo Zhuang Man Lu”: During the Chongning period, several monks from Baiyun Temple on Tianping Mountain in Pingjiang Prefecture brought back a basket of wild mushrooms from the mountain. Unfortunately, the wild mushrooms were toxic, and after a hearty meal, the monks began to vomit and have diarrhea. Among them, three monks who took fresh honeysuckle in time were safe, while the others who did not take honeysuckle in time all perished. This shows that the detoxifying effect of honeysuckle is extraordinary.【Patent Formulation】Six Flavor Flavonoid Tea: This tea is consumed in the form of herbal tea, made from a combination of six types of traditional Chinese herbs recognized by the Ministry of Health, including “Honeysuckle, Ginkgo leaves, Jue Ming Zi, Huai Mi, Hawthorn, Chrysanthemum”. Used for carbuncles and sores, sore throat, dan du, heat blood toxin dysentery, wind-heat colds, febrile diseases with fever.Dosage and Administration6-15g.Storage MethodStore in a cool, dry place, protect from moisture and pests.Traditional Chinese medicine believes that honeysuckle is cold in nature, sweet in taste, and has the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying, which can treat heat toxin swellings, carbuncles, and sores. Due to its dispersing effect, it can also treat external invasion of wind-heat and initial stage of febrile diseases. For example, the Yin Qiao Jie Du Pian (pills) for treating wind-heat colds is primarily made with honeysuckle. When combined with huang qin, it forms Yin Pian, which can treat acute upper respiratory infections, acute pharyngitis, and acute tonsillitis.Honeysuckle distilled in water can produce “Honeysuckle Syrup”, which has the effect of clearing summer heat and can treat children’s heat sores, prickly heat, and summer heat.Since ancient times, there has been a custom in our country to give children honeysuckle tea a few times before the arrival of summer to prevent the occurrence of summer heat sores; during the hot summer, drinking honeysuckle tea can also prevent heat stroke, enteritis, and dysentery.During the hot summer, people are prone to heat stroke, and making honeysuckle into cool tea for frequent drinking can prevent heat stroke. From late summer to the Mid-Autumn Festival, bacterial dysentery and enteritis are prevalent, and honeysuckle can be used as the main ingredient, combined with huang lian and huang qin, decocted into a soup for oral use, which has good preventive and therapeutic effects. When harvesting honeysuckle, it is best to pick it when it is in bud, with yellowish-white and plump ones being the best. If you pinch a handful of high-quality honeysuckle and place it in a glass cup, pour boiling water over it, after a while, you will see the flower buds hanging vertically in the water, neither floating nor sinking, looking very beautiful. Once the water soaks the flower buds, they will gradually sink to the bottom of the cup.According to chemical analysis, honeysuckle contains luteolin, inositol, saponins, tannins, etc. Pharmacological experiments show that honeysuckle has a broad antibacterial spectrum, inhibiting pathogens such as Shigella, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Bordetella pertussis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, all of which have inhibitory effects, and it also has anti-influenza virus effects. Clinically, it is often used to treat infections caused by the aforementioned pathogenic microorganisms.Recent studies indicate that honeysuckle can promote the transformation of lymphocytes, and the lymphocyte transformation rate can reflect cellular immune function, thus enhancing the body’s immunity. Honeysuckle can also enhance the phagocytic function of white blood cells, further improving immune function. Honeysuckle can also promote the release of adrenal cortex hormones, significantly inhibiting acute inflammation.Animal experiments conducted by the Nanjing Institute of Wild Plants have shown that honeysuckle can significantly improve animals’ tolerance to high-temperature environments. When 50% of the control group animals died due to high temperatures, only 6% of the animals fed honeysuckle tea died in the same environment, confirming the heat-clearing and summer-heat relieving effects of honeysuckle.Using honeysuckle and chrysanthemum to make “Yin Ju Drink” as tea to treat 200 cases of hypertension and arteriosclerosis showed good results. Among 46 systematically observed cases, 35 cases had their blood pressure reduced to normal, while others also showed varying degrees of reduction, and symptoms such as dizziness, headache, and insomnia improved.Using honeysuckle injection to treat acute tonsillitis showed efficacy comparable to antibiotics, and no toxicity or side effects were found during treatment.Functions and IndicationsAccording to “Bencao Gangmu”, “Honeysuckle is good at transforming toxins, thus treating carbuncles, swellings, and sores…” Since ancient times, honeysuckle has been commonly used to clear heat and detoxify, treating febrile diseases with fever, heat toxin dysentery, and carbuncles, and is also used for wind-heat colds, bronchitis, and other conditions.Modern pharmacological research shows that honeysuckle has antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and immune-regulating effects.Recommended by the editor: A great drink for summer: HoneysuckleCommonly Used FormulasFormulas containing honeysuckle are particularly common; surveys show that one-third of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions use honeysuckle.Heat toxin carbuncles can be used alone for strong decoction or combined with pu gong ying, zi hua di ding, and ye ju hua to enhance the effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, and reducing swelling. Representative formula includes Wu Wei Xiao Du Yin, from “Yizong Jinjian” surgical heart method: “Honeysuckle three qian, wild chrysanthemum, pu gong ying, zi hua di ding, and zi bei tian kui zi each one qian two fen, two bowls of water, decoct to eight parts, add half a bowl of no ash wine, boil for two or three minutes, take hot. Repeat decoction until sweating is achieved.” This formula has the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying, dissipating carbuncles. It is indicated for various carbuncles, sores, and swelling, local redness, swelling, and pain, or fever and chills, red tongue with yellow coating, and rapid pulse.Although this formula contains only five ingredients, it is powerful and is the first choice for traditional Chinese medicine to treat fire toxin accumulation leading to carbuncles and sores. The modern dosage and decoction method are: 20 grams of honeysuckle, 15 grams each of wild chrysanthemum, pu gong ying, zi hua di ding, and zi bei tian kui zi, decoct in water, add appropriate amount of wine for oral use, and the dregs can be crushed and applied to the affected area. For initial stage of sores and swelling, or if it has formed pus but not yet ruptured, it can be combined with chuan shan jia, zao jiao ci, da bei, bai zhi, etc. A representative formula is Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin, from “Xiao Zhu Fu Ren Liang Fang”: “Chuan shan jia, gan cao, fang feng, mo yao, chi shao, gui shao, ru xiang, bei mu, tian hua fen, jiao ci each one qian, bai zhi six fen, honeysuckle and chen pi each three qian. Use good wine three bowls, decoct to one and a half bowls. If for the upper body, take after meals; if for the lower body, take before meals, and add three to four cups of wine to assist the medicinal effect, do not change.” Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin primarily clears heat and detoxifies, promotes blood circulation and qi movement, and reduces swelling and promotes suppuration, known as “the holy medicine for sores and carbuncles, the first formula in surgery”, used for all initial stages of sores and itching. The dosage of honeysuckle is relatively high, good at clearing heat and detoxifying, combined with bai zhi and fang feng to disperse wind and eliminate evils, allowing heat toxins to be released from the exterior; flower powder and bei mu clear heat and transform phlegm, dissipate lumps and promote suppuration.Modern dosage: 3 grams of chuan shan jia, 3 grams of zao jiao ci, 3 grams of dang gui tail, 3 grams of gan cao, 9 grams of honeysuckle, 3 grams of chi shao, 3 grams of ru xiang, 3 grams of mo yao, 3 grams of tian hua fen, 9 grams of chen pi, 3 grams of fang feng, 3 grams of bei mu, 3 grams of bai zhi.
