Stomach cold (胃寒) is a term in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that refers to the deficiency of Yang Qi in the spleen and stomach, caused by excessive consumption of cold foods or the direct invasion of cold pathogens leading to the stagnation of Yin cold in the stomach. The primary causes of stomach cold are related to dietary habits, such as irregular eating and a preference for cold foods.
Regularly consuming both hot and cold foods, eating at irregular times, or having inconsistent hunger and fullness can gradually lead to stomach cold. Additionally, the fast-paced lifestyle and mental stress of modern individuals contribute to the increasing incidence of spleen and stomach disorders.
In daily life, we often explain stomach diseases to customers based on their preference for hot or cold drinks to distinguish between stomach cold and stomach heat. However, the common symptoms of stomach cold can also be classified into deficiency and excess types.
Distinguishing Between Stomach Yang Deficiency Cold and Stomach Excess Cold
1. Stomach Yang Deficiency Cold (胃虚寒)
This generally refers to the deficiency of Yang Qi in the spleen and stomach, characterized by the presence of internal Yin cold.
Symptoms: The main manifestations include dull, persistent stomach pain that worsens when fasting, alleviated by eating, fatigue, and pain exacerbated by consuming cold foods or exposure to cold. Other symptoms include vomiting clear fluids, fatigue, cold hands and feet, and loose stools. The tongue coating is pale white, and the pulse is weak. This condition is more common in men, particularly those who are overweight and enjoy drinking alcohol.
2. Stomach Excess Cold (胃实寒)
This generally refers to cold stagnation and Qi stagnation, characterized by the invasion of external cold pathogens affecting the stomach.
Symptoms: The main manifestations include sudden, severe stomach pain that worsens with cold, a preference for warmth and aversion to pressure, relief from warmth, a lack of thirst, and vomiting clear fluids. This condition is more common in women, particularly those who are thin and prefer style over warmth.
3. Similarities
Both conditions experience pain that worsens with cold, a preference for warm foods, and a pale white tongue coating.
4. Differences
Excess cold pain is generally more severe than deficiency cold pain, while deficiency cold is accompanied by significant Yang deficiency symptoms, such as cold hands and feet and loose stools.

Precautions
1. Foods to Avoid
Avoid highly irritating foods such as strong liquor, strong coffee, mustard, and raw garlic, as well as hard, sour, spicy, salty, hot, cold, and coarse foods. These foods can irritate and damage the gastric mucosa.
2. Balanced Diet
Maintain a regular diet, eating at set times and in appropriate amounts. Avoid alternating between excessive hunger and fullness, and avoid binge eating to prevent burdening the gastrointestinal tract. Do not eat too much for breakfast, and avoid lying down immediately after dinner, as these habits are detrimental to gastric health.
3. Chew Slowly
Eating too quickly is also a dietary taboo for stomach cold. It is important to chew slowly to reduce the burden on the gastrointestinal tract.
4. Regular Lifestyle
Maintain a regular lifestyle, consuming soft and easily digestible foods such as porridge and soups. Pay attention to adjusting clothing as the weather turns cold.
5. Stay Positive
Maintain stable and optimistic emotions. You can prepare a homemade drink of brown sugar, honey, and black tea, using water to dissolve it.
